VSG on 01/11/12

Ok its been awhile since I've been on, I'm very busy and got on with my life just like you all will, unless you are obsessed with going on forums all day. LOL I just wanted to update for all those people searching forums about wls and how people do after the first year. This is my update.

Well the first year the weight dropped off with out me even lifting a finger(no exercise), well my job is pretty physical at times, being in trades type of  business. I did walk several miles for a while but I kind of got away from that. I went into surgery 277lbs and lost most the weight in the first year probably 65-70lbs. Yes I wasn't very heavy to begin, but big enough and obese. After that first year it seems old habits start to creep back, candy, sweets, chips, eating more than a 1/4 cup of food. Having the VSG alot of things are sliders like chips, popcorn, breads. Really anything that turns to moosh will be a slider. That could really start adding up and putting on lbs. At my lightest I saw 199 for about two days and now I'm at about 213lbs Im a diabetic 2 so I have been doing Atkins type diet for the past year and it is a real struggle to loose weight anymore without any heavy physical activity. It does seem like the Atkins diet is much easier with having the sleeve, then it was when I tried it pre op. I eat alot of meat and cheese and those are not really sliders so they fill you up and it also keeps my blood sugar and a1c the best its ever been(6). I really wish my life was like the first 5 months after the surgery, where I could only eat half a hotdog and be full. Now I could probably eat two whole hotdogs or a whole sandwich. So don't plan on having that full feeling for the rest of your life because your hunger will come back, and you will be able to eat more than you can now. You will also find out that you will still be DIETING like you were before the operation. I guess the real key is that you have to play by the wsl rules and you must get into physical activity or you will gain it back. I work at a Hospital and I know many many employees that have had wsl and they gained allot of the weight back they just don't come on forums telling everyone, believe me they are out there! I have no problem eating any foods. I wish I did. Like my craving for sweets, that never went anywhere. So that is my story. Don't plan on having the wls do everything for you because its all going to come to a halt, and you will have to start dieting more and working out more just to drop those couple lbs.  Would I do it again? Hell yea! Buffets were my best friend and probably contributed to 50% of my weight, I loved them! Now I could only MAYBE finish a small plate at one, its not worth going. So I had to say good bye to buffets. Health wise, I'm great. Cholesterol down, A1C down, and no more vitamins or calcium, my blood work is always great. Good luck to any future wls's and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. Im from a family of 7 and 5 of us have had wls and the 6 one is on her way. God our family should do a reality show! Do you hear that TLC.

I'm in the same boat.  I had VSG surgery in August 2011 and I went from a high of 255 down to 182.  It was so easy to lose in the beginning, I was never hungry and couldn't eat much.  But now, I'm back to (almost) my old eating habits.  I'm up to 209.  It's time for a change!  That fat girl is not going to run my life again!  I'm getting back on the horse!

so with you on this - i have my surgery almost a year ago to the date and it was fairly easy to drop the first 50-55 pounds. now i've been hovering for months at 190 - trying to get back on track with protein shakes and more protein throughout the day. i knew going into this that this was about the surgery so much as it was about my brain. but it's not even close to being easy.
