alcohol & RNY

It is so strange to open this sight and the first thing I see is your post. I too have been struggling with alcohol. I have been a drinker most of my adult life. I stopped for about a year because of my surgery. I started a little at a time and then it went to drinking until I am passed out. I have been drinking & driving but no incidents YET. I too stopped drinking on Monday. It has been really hard. I was well aware of the percentages of cross addiction long before my surgery. I was always worried about it and I went there any way. If it is not drinking it is shopping. I wonder how to change an addictive personality. I wish I had an exercise addiction. That would be awesome. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Deena, we both need to create new addictions!  Fortunately  I have some "good addictions" that I have been neglecting, so I am trying to get more involved in those - training and competing in dog agility and barrel racing.   I also love running but can't seem to get into that just yet.

Guess need an OH-AA group on here!

Good luck

Hey guys...one thing that is NOT being told here is that in gastric bypass patients it has been found that your alcohol blood levels (BAC) can continue to climb for 3 days after you have had any consumption. SO...what that means is even if you aren't drinking to get drunk...and aren't even feeling impaired...you LEGALLY probably are.

I was never a drinker either.  I learned an important lesson in 2007. My boyfriend and I had shared a bottle of wine one evening. The next morning I was involved in an accident. I was completely sober. I didn't have the lung capacity to blow in the breathalyzer so I was handcuffed and taken in for a blood test. I was charged on a misdemeanor DUI with a BAC of .39, lost my license for a year, paid astronomical fines, drunk driving classes, the WHOLE ROTTEN ENCHILADA!

I was completely baffled! A very expensive lesson learned was that alcohol--no matter how little you drink, can lead to horrible consequences after gastric bypass surgery. It isn't worth the possibilities of "being in an accident"- when it can take up to 3 days for the alcohol to clear my system and while it is in there...it drives BAC levels up...as sober as you may be.

I urge ALL to be responsible and take this experience as one you learn by before your own trials!

Peace

wow!  3 days.  thats interesting, so for a regulary drinker you are never cleared.  No wonder the liver can't tolerate it well.  Thanks for sharing your experience.  it a real eye opener.
