Vitamin D Levels - Muscle aches and pains

Hello everyone:

Need some info.

I am 3 years post op and when my prescription for vitamin D ran out I did not bother to get it filled again.  I have developed quite severe muscle and body aches-to the point where I have trouble sleeping.  Could this be from my vitamin D being very low?  I have started taking Vitalady vitamin D.  Wondering how long it will take for this to take affect, or is there a shot or something I can take that will put me where I need to be.  I also started back taking my calicum+D.  I am 53 so I am sure Osto is affecting me somewhere.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Teresa, prescription Vitamin D isn't easily absorbed so changing to Vitalady dry D is a better choice.  How much are you taking?  Yes, muscle aches/bone pain is what I experienced when my D was on the lower end.  Once I started taking 50,000 IU everyday for a week I started feeling better.

I did that for a month and had my D rechecked.  My number went back up FAST and I've been able to keep it above 80 with 5,000 iu a day since.

Hi,

I have bone/joint aches too.  Just had blood work and my Vit D is low.  No one mentioned that they could be related.  My arthritis doc said no OA in my shoulders, elbows and hips, so he just said it's fibromyalgia.  I'm like "WHAT" ???  I take only the D that is in a multivitamin.  Thanks for the info.  I'll need to get back on that!   I knew I missed this place!  :)

Tina,

My primary had diagnosed me with fibro too... turns out I had been vitamin D deficient for a couple of years.  My reading was 8 (range is 30-100 with optimal being over 50).  My bone, muscle, and joint pain all turned out to be caused from the vitamin D deficiency.  I'm on my third month of supplementing it and my body is THRILLED!!!! :)  Best wishes to you!!!

Hi Tina!

I have a strong feeling I'm vitamin D deficient. My Dr told me to stop taking it because the levels were way too high. That was about 9 month's ago now and I forget what the level was off the top of my head. I DID stupidly stop taking it.

In the past about 4 month's I've been getting increased joint pain. I also have strong pain at the end of my shoulders and into my upper arms, heading toward my elbows. This pain has been really worrying me. I'm going to try getting back to basics with vit D - I was wondering what dose you take? Were taking to bring your levels up as quickly as possible?

Thanks!!

There is some risk when your levels are over the max range (100+). However, 5,000 iu per day should cover what you need without putting you into the risk of getting your levels too high. :-) But it would still be a good idea to get you vitamin D checked.

Aches and pains are directly related to low D levels and can easily be remedied by taking dry vit D-  I get mine from Amazon.

Pain also can come from being hyperparathyroid from skipping your calcium supplement, low vitamin b's (not just B12)

My B6 tanked because the fountain diet energy drink I drank constantly was done away with a year ago.   Here I was, almost 10 years out and never had to supplement b's (& really didn't know why)  Suddenly my fingers and hands hurt so much, the left with carpal tunnel, the other just weak and oh so painful.  The energy drink is sold in cans & I checked the label.  It was giving me 225% Vit B6 per 16 oz.  No wonder I never had problems.

I'd try the D first, you should feel better after that.

YES, YES, and YES.... muscle aches and pains can be correlated with Vitamin D levels. Furthermore discontinuing your calcium also compounds this issue. Calcium and Vitamin D need to be together in order for calcium to be absorbed. So, I would imagine that your calcium levels are affected as well. Please get back on your Vitamin D and calcium.

Because of the type of surgical procedure I had... even with supplementation, it is very difficult to get my levels out.... I can be as low as non-dectable for Vitamin D. If you have the means to correct this, please do.

Vitamin D can contribute to aches and pains, fatigue, and also the ability to fight certain diseases such as cancer - do what you can while you can. Every year we discover more about how these vitamins affect our health and well-being. Good luck!

Thank you very much for the info.  I have started back.  I really can't tell you why I stopped...no reason.  I am paying for it now however.  I am taking the dry D from vitalady.  I have ordered some liquid calcium with magnesium.  It has some D in it also.

Thanks again!

Make an appointment to get those labs drawn. Then get someone on here to look over the numbers with you. Just because the labs appear to be in the normal / acceptable ranges for most folks doesn't mean they are where we need them to be. I had some levels (especially D & Bs) that were way to low. Upping the supplements on them with types that we can more easily absorb has made a TREMENDOUS difference. Good luck to you.
