GBS, TT (Total Thyroidectomy) and TSH levels out of control... HELP!!
New here! :) thanks for letting me share... in 2005 I had a RNY Gastric Bypass. went from 302 pounds to 158. in 2008 i had a total thyroidectomy. no cancer, nodules so large they were interfering with my breathing and carotid artery... immediatly after the TT surgery, my parathyroids froze and caused a dangerously low blood calcium/magnesium issue which landed me in the hospital for two weeks. I now struggle to control my TSH Levels ... not small fluxuations either... it seems like its one or the other... i have been as low as 0.013 to my current 21.25. So frustrating. I have been on medication for thyroid for 10 years - so I was on it when I had GBS and since the thyroidectomy, struggled to keep it regulated - not to mention that two years ago, i had a hysterectomy... talk about hormone issues... arrrggh! was on Synthroid many moons ago... insurace dictates everything so i had to switch to Levothyroxine. That wasn't working either - hence the low 0.013 levels of TSH... so Armour worked for me a while ago ****il it was suddenly difficult to get a prescription for and I had to switch back to Levothyroxine) so i asked to switch back to that. I was put on the equivalent dose to the old meds... just had my bloodwork done and now I'm way up to 21.25 ... i know those who suffer from any thyroid problems will understand when I say that I'm too tired to function... i really am. I have a full time job... and a brand new grand baby... i'm only 42 years old... way too young to feel this old... HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I'm considering contacing the hospital where I had my GBS (Henry Ford Detroit) and see if they have any advice, any expertise in this area of the two issues that are hand in hand, or some sort of referral to an endocrinologist who is at that hospital and can communicate with the bariatric surgery folks too... i'm so tired, I'm tired of feeling terrible, tired of hurting, tired of just being tired... and tired of complaining about it... !!!!!!!
Jenny -
I hope you can find someone to coordinate the care you need so that you can get some relief.
I've not had the thyroid problems - mine have been more around getting the iron stores regulated. But I understand that feeling of tired of being tired, tired of hurting, and tired of complaining (even I couldn't stand to listen to myself whine.)
I switched from a family medicine PCP to a PCP who is an internal medicine specialist. The right doctor makes all the difference in making sure your health is managed and the medicines are working for you.

So sorry to hear about your problems. I have thyroid issues too. My danged insurance switched me to Levo too from Snythroid. I have gained about fifty pounds and am exhausted too! I wonder if I am having the same problems as you?? I am going to do some research and find out. I would try to get a referral to an endocrinoloist if I were you. Good Luck!
LOL... i have an endocrinologist who is fantastic... she has tried everything, even suggested I go to a holistic (sp?) doctor to see if it was something that way ... not only does she try all different routes, she tries everything i ask for as well... we are just at a stalemate with my body... that is why i was thinking of contacting the hospital where i had my GBS to see if they have someone on staff at that hosptial who deals with the GBS and thyroid - hormone stuff too... aaarrgggh... so frustrated with it!
I had my GBS in 2006 and 4yrs later found I had hashimoto's syndrome. I had a huge goiter that completely surrounded my neck. When they did the tyroidectomy they took all the parathyroids as well. I agree with you concerning the synthroid vs Levothyroxine. And my endrocronologist insisted to my insurance company that I must have the synthroid. It has been an uphill battle to find the right dosage, my internal med dr. is still working on it. Hope you find a solution. Let us know.
