Good morning OH...hoping all is well with everyone. I had open gastric bypass on 12/01/2008 and it went great...no complications and weight loss was great. I have put back on a significant amount of weight but no where near what I was and I refuse to beat myself up about it.. I am onlyhuman. However, that is not why  i am posting today. I have been having these vomiting episodes...i think perhaps i may be eating too fast or too much not quite sure but I get this extremely uncomfortable feeling after eating sometimes...usually if it is meat/poultry/veggies....i become extremely nauseated and it is painful ..it is so hard to describe...it is also very painful....its like intervals of excess pain maybe i get 30-45 secs pain free. i start to salivate excessively. it feels as if i have gas and need to belch/burp but iam unable to do so and if i try to swallow back trying to vomit i vomit up very thick globs of saliva....more like mucus but it is clear????......the pain continues and it is unbearable until i have to stick my finger down so i can vomit the food up... I know this is gross but i figure this wpuld be the best place to ask a ?? like this...please reply on any thoughts or opinions you may hae regarding this....it will be greatly appreciated

Mahogany :

I've had this happen, even in the last year and I am almost 7yrs P/O...Sounds like you are not chewing enough and the food is sticking in your stoma opening, this causes the very uncomfortable pain & the mucus like flem stuff you are describing ( it the bodies way of trying to make a lubricant to get the opening unstuck)...If you induce vomiting to get it up, in the process you suck down alot of air which then makes you belch/burp until all the air moves out...For me the episodes are followed by a serious need to just lie down in a fetal position  for at least 20 minutes & the next several BM's have alot of air in them too...

Thank you sooooo much for your input.....I kind of assumed that was the problem...but the experience you described matches mine to a tee...yes...after one of those episodes i have to lay down. Congratulations on ypur 7+ year journey you are doing great according to your numbers....Have you ever been "off track" and gained weight back? if so how did you get back "on"?  My numbers are much different than yours but hey (pre surery weight 377.....lowest weght achieved 226....current weight 275 OUCH!!!!

I always try to look at these episodes as a reminder of how I should be continuing to follow basic principles of GBP, you know, chew/chew/chew - no drinking with food, protein forward, etc...

As for being "off track" and in the process now of trying to get back on, I post the BOTT site regularly...My current 143 represents a 13lb regain from where I want to be in maintenance (which is 130 or less)...It is ALOT harder now to make those extra lbs go away, extremely slow and a little frustrating, but mostly because I'm struggling to remain committed to REALLY following the early rules that help you stay on track - like NO real sugar & NO white carbs...If I could stick to that hardcore I feel the weight would drop back, but mentally I'm not ready, or I should say that I'm not unhappy enough with the regain (do alot of gym work and my clothes still fit OK) to go to the hardcore deprivation that will kick me back into ketosis and re-start my weightloss

hello-i had my sugery (open RNY) in January 2006.  I have been having the same problem and have had a few endoscopies to address the problem..  I also had to have an endoscopic dilation. It turns out I have an ulcer and a suture line disruption.  I am on prilosec for the ulcer.  It has really helped with the pain and vomiting.  I am scheduled to see Dr. Thompson  at Brigham and Womens in Boston in June.  it will just be for a consultation but I hope i meet the criteria for repair because there are some days I feel really crappy.  I just sent a message to my gastric bypass surgeon today telling him I feel like I have an eating disorder now because I think so much about what I am eating and drinking and what exercise I am doing.  Dr Randall at Lawrence Memorial in Medford (love himand he is the best).  I have gained back about 30 pounds in the past three years.  i've kept off 100.  I have been losing and gaining the same seven pounds for a year.  i am concerned about gaining weight even though I eat right and journal it all and exercise almost daily.  Please contact your doctor.  Dr Randall tells GB patients we aren't supposed to be vomiting without reason.
