NEED SOME ANSWERS TO SOMETHING I READ IN OH MAGAZINE

For those of you who get the OH magazine I have a question and a concern about something I read. It's on page 40 and there is an article written by a Dr Miachel Bilof where he says that dairy should not be our main source of protein. I am happy to say that I am just over 6 years PO and been very successful. I haven't touched cakes, cookies, ice cream, chocolate (which was my main source of addiction), french fries, potatoes or basically anything that got me into trouble and led me to the path of WLS. I take all my daily required vitamins and drink all my daily required liquids and exercise.

I live on protein plus veggies.  I am a vegetarian (not vegan) and my main source of protein is non fat cheese, nuts (healthy ones) and fish. The dr writes we shouldn't eat too much cheese or nuts or even too much milk even if it's non fat. Even though I have been doing great over the last 6 years this is somewhat confusing to me and especially being a vegetarian, my choices are pretty limited. I do eat the same things every day and have my routine which I feel comfortable with.

I would appreciate any feedback on this please to let me know your thoughts.  I am not going to change what I eat but again, would love to hear what you have to say on this subject.

Thanks

I'd love to hear his reasons for that too..I don't drink milk cuz I'm lactose intolerant but I can eat cheese and don't eat tree nuts cuz I'm allergic.

I wouldn't put all that much stock in it since you're limited..I'm limited too and have to discount that stuff..

Congrats on your journey so far!
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

You are right and I'm not taking too much stock in it all.  As much as it's nice to get advice, I think if we are doing what works for us, then just carry on.  If it's not broke don't fix it as they say.

Thanks for your reply and good luck on your journey also.

OK, I think it get the issue from reading his blog.  In a sentence, his main complaint is "price performance ratio"  Meaning: how much protein do you get from the calories?  Here is my take:

Let's define a "perfect protein" as one that gives you 1 gram of protein for 4 calores.  This is perfect, because 1 gram of protein IS 4 calories and so your calories are 100% protein.

The blog recommends Egg White.  For these you get 4g of protein for 16 calories which means egg whites are 100% protein (I agree)

He also likes Tofu.  For this you get 8g of protein for 100g of Tofu with 70 calories.  Now, here you have 64 calories of protein and 6 calories of  "other stuff" (Carbs and Fat).  You could call this 9% "wasted" calories

Now consider Almonds:  100 grams of Almonds is 575 calories giving 21g of protein.  So you have 82 protein calories and 493 calories of  carbs and fat.  You could call this 85% of "wasted calories" since they do not contribute to protein.

In the end, you need all three macronutrients (protein, carbs, and fat) to survive and calories consumed are ultimately what determines weight loss/gain.  The remainder of the question is what offers the most satiety.  If your eating target is 100 calories, only you can decide if 100 calories of egg white is better than 100 calories of Almonds or 100 calories of ice cream.

Another point is that some believe that the lactose, or milk sugar, can stir carb cravings in some people. I haven't found that to be the case for me, though.

Me neither, I think this Dr should have specified those facts instead of making it look like the foods are not good for everyone!

I think whatever works best for us then we should stick with it which is totally what I am doing.
