sorry if this is gross, but want to know if its only me
i am 2 years out from rny surgery. i went from 253 to 126 but currently weigh between 130-140 at all times. 140 is my doc ideal weight for me and his advice and not to go under 130. i started looking like a crackhead lol. ok this surgery did make me chronic anemic so i dont know if this is a contributing factor. but my question is, is it normal to have several gross (very tmi to describe sorry) bowel movements a day? and also bm and farts smell a whole lot more now then they did before surgery.... just wonderin if normal for anybody else....
Ya know? You have me thinking on that one. I have bms a couple times a day, most days. Usually depending on when I drink coffee..in the morning and usually if I have starbucks decaf around noon..My farts only smell really bad when I eat sugar free stuff and that hasn't been a problem in some time. Maybe your farts will quit smelling as bad over time.
I don't think having more than one movement in a day is a bad thing..The shorter time the waste sits in your digestive system, the better..I have to think..but that's just me.
I'm not anemic though.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I'm almost 3 years out. I go everyday, sometimes more than once, and yes, my BMs smell much worse after surgery.
The farts, well, I can clear a room if I eat "fake" sugar or anything simple carb or desserts. But I don't care...cuz if I want it bad enough, I'm eating it, but I do limit those choices!

I found that I need to stay away from the sugar alcohols if I want to be socially acceptable. Also if you are taking Celebrate vitamins, they are terrible for causing gas. I switched to Centrum and it is much better. Going two or more times a day is actually healthier. Your food is being malabsorbed so that is part of the reason for so much and so smelly.
I will be 2 years out in April and had BPD surgery. (I know my profile is wrong and can't seem to correct it). With this surgery I was warned of the problems you are having. I started at 264 and finally ended up at 141. I am still looking a pound here and there. I also have IBS, and had my gall bladder out a year ago. I had a very bad experience when the gall bladder was removed and became anemic, however iron pills straightened that out. I have a different gastro Dr for all my issues, was with him long before the bariatric surgery.
The smell as explained to me has to do with the bile from the liver, which in my case has no where to go now that the gall bladder is gone. A probiotic helps with this. I also was having very loose, frequet movements, even some incontinence. Again, Dr told me most of that is caused from the excess bile going into the bowel. So I am now taking imodium, it took a little time to get it just right. For me 1 in the am and 1 just before dinner is good for me. I also make sure I get enough bulk, any extra fiber is good. I only consume dairy without lactose. While sugar doesn't bother me as far as dumping I do find when I eat it my movements are looser and smellier. Also if I have a glass of wine, again that does have a good amount of sugar content.
If I know I will be eating out and not sure what I will consume I will take beano. I have maintained my weight for 6 months now after loosing 90% of my excess weight and every once in a while I will go down 1 pound. Hope that helps! I do have more movements now than before sometimes 4 times a day. But normal type.

I go according to how much I have eaten. I am limited in portion size still after 6 1/2 yrs out.
But if I eat several times a day, I will go more than once, usually more than twice. I think it's an individual thing, and not having a gall bladder usually makes for looser stools due to constant bile dumping into the digestive tract.
Simple carbs like potatoes or sweets make for a really stinking stool, and gas for me. I only eat potatoes at home, and find I rarely crave sweets anymore. You may have to do some trial and error to see what foods make things better or worse for you.
I am not anemic but I take iron pills to prevent this.

I am anemic due to periods and have tried ferrous fumerate and ferrous glucomate. I think it is the iron pills that make the bm's smell. I too have no gallbladder. I take Nexium to control the acid reflux.
Perhaps the smell is the iron pills??

Stats: HW 311 lbs in Aug 2010, VSG on 10/19/2010, Surgeons goal 208lbs, My Goal 175lbs or less Current 193lbs
If you still anemic and get iron infusions - ask your doc to run (if he had not) copper.level. My hematologist told me that to bulid blood - we need, beside everyhing els e- copper. Too much is toxic - not enough - will prevent bulding blood cells.

BTW: the GB removal makes you not digest the fat. When I had my GB removed - I had to learn what to eat and how much at one tiime. The extra fat that you do not digest and absorb ends up in your coln so you will have more BM and the bacteria in the colon makes the fat smell nasty...
