Losing again! Yay!
Hello friends. Sorry I haven't been on for a while. I've been trying to figure things out with my weight-gain issues. I had honestly ALMOST given up on ever losing this weight again. A friend of mine and her friend (both post-ops) heard about the 17-Day Diet, and tried it. Both of them began losing, and both had been struggling for several years.
I tried it starting June 13, weighing 226. Today, I weighed 212, so 14 pounds in a month! I can't even believe it, because I have been struggling with this weight for so long, and had about given up. My RNY was in September 2003, and the last several years have been really bad for me with regain.
It's really a diet that we are supposed to follow anyway as post-ops. Low carb, low fat, and high (quality) protein, along with plenty of water and a little exercise. I've had a few days that weren't great, but seeing this weight loss is keeping me motivated to stay with it and get more exercise too. Keep me in your thoughts and prayers that I will be able to keep my head wrapped around this "new" way of eating. I was one of those ones who thought I could "change" the system and that the magic would last forever after my surgery!! Boy, was I wrong.
Best to everyone! If you're struggling with similar issues, you might give this diet (lifestyle change) a try. It's nice to see some rapid loss and at the same time not to be hungry.

ok what is this 17 day diet and where did you find it?? I got down to 140 at 10 months post op and am currently 170 at 3 yrs post op now- want to lose 20 lbs. I have had a baby in the past year and had some issues with PPD and taking meds, that contributed to most of my weight gain back. It's been impossible to lose it and I'm at a loss of what to do now.
Go to www.the17daydiet.com. It will tell you a lot more there. I bought the book through Amazon.com for $13.88, and I believe it is widely available. As I said, it's high-protein (fish, chicken, turkey) for the first 17-day cycle, lots of veggies, low-fat, low-carb. You may eat as much protein and veggies as it takes to make you feel full, and yogurt/milk is limited to 2 servings a day, as is fruit. You are supposed to eat all carbs (fruit) before 2 PM. I'm in the 2nd cycle now, and it allows lean beef, pork, and some additional carbs like brown rice/yams every other day. It's not that hard to follow, really. I still crave carbs, but I'm an addict, so I don't expect that to stop. I just have to learn to deal with it!
Oh my - 2 oz. portions! That seems pretty small, well for me at least. Being 8 years out, I can eat "close" to normally (what is normal for most folks), although not near as much as I could pre-op. The beauty of this type of diet is that you can eat very liberal amounts of protein and veggies, enough that you feel satisfied. The downside is missing carbs. However, the plan does allow you to gradually re-introduce carbs (whole grain and unprocessed of course). I think the tricky part for me will be to not allow too many carbs back in. And yes, I still crave them even after a month of being off them. I think I'm like some people who quit smoking. They can quit but the desire never goes away. I'm sure that will be me.
Check out www.the17daydiet.com. There is info there, and the book is widely available. I bought mine from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble online, and it was pretty cheap (under $15.00). There aren't any foods on it that you can't buy in a grocery store, although I must say I'm spending more to eat this way. But that's OK, I think my good health is worth spending a little more on.
It's been an added bonus to see relatively rapid weight loss. I don't do well sometimes when the going is slow-that's when I tend to give up. There is no disputing the fact that I will have to eat like this forever now, if I want to maintain this loss. After you lose your weight, the book/doctor advocates following the plan during the week, and having 2 or 3 favorite meals on the weekends, whatever they may be. However, somehow you have to learn control and get right back on the plan. So there are challenges involved, but as I said, at least I am seeing some results with this.
Best wishes.

Carlita I am late seeing this post, but like you I am pretty far out 8-6-04 way my rny. I started out at 286 lost down to 155 and have gained significantly in the last 3 years. I am now 230 but had gotten even heavier. I began exercising again and eating low - carb, high protein again as well and have seen some weight loss.
It has been over a month since your post, how are you doing with the 17 day diet? Were you able to maintain the loss?
Give us an update because I am certainly interested in jumpstarting my weight loss even more.

Hi, Saundra. I would recommend the 17-Day Diet. It is a good plan, and very close to the way we are supposed to be eating. I lost 15 pounds in a few weeks, and haven't been following it to the letter for the last month, but staying close, and I have not regained any weight. I want to get back to it strictly, though, very soon, as I have more weight I want to lose. Also, I should add that I felt really good physically and mentally when following this plan. Much better than when I eat too many "bad" carbs. I'm finding that I really have to stay vigiliant though, or it's real easy for me to slip back to my unhealthy habits. Good luck if you try it, and let me know how you do.
Congrats on getting some of that re-gain off again. I know how terribly difficult it can be.
