Hi, I have been off the forums for 2 years. The Reactive hypoglycemia has developed in last 6 months. Back to making sure I eat enough protein. Goal weight was 137 am now 148. But at 137 I was not healthy. So how do you gage weight gain and health? Thanks, Delphy

I gauge weight and health by how I feel..How my clothes fit and my lab results..

Reactive Hypoglycemia sucks..I have to pair all my fibrous carbs with protein and have to stay away from simple or white carbs completely..that means no pasta, no bread, no rice..no sugar..
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Thanks for the reply. This is why I like this website..communication and friends. Could you send me info on how you figure your diet? my email is [email protected]. I am also interested in your symptoms and how often they occur. I did a lot of protein yesterday and felt so much better.

You can see what I eat and when I eat it on the daily accountability thread..my totals are there too. It's been a long time since I had a reaction but it's generally when I have wheat thins..or something to do with bananas..too many carbs in those things/not enough fiber or protein and if I don't have something protein rich with them, it's bad.

I always center my meals on protein first so I may have a pack of cooked frozen chicken but that goes on a salad (lettuce, tomato, cucumber, dressing..) or on cooked green cabbage with veggies..or in a tortilla (corn most of the time) ...there are times when I do have just a burger. If I'm out eating, I have it wrapped in lettuce. If I'm at home, I put it on a sandwich thin (whole wheat, whole grain...and I'm looking for the rye ones by Arnold)..

I believe it's all about how quickly something can be processed in our pouch..dense protein is hard to grind up..high fiber veggies and fruits are hard to grind up..so they digest over time and that keeps your sugar level higher longer and not dropping too quick..crackers, bread, pasta..all are too quickly processed and cause a drop in sugar afterwards. But I'm not a doctor. I know what works for me. I surely don't want to get tested for it because they'll give me that sugar syrup stuff and that will make me sick for days..yuk.

Oh, and remember..If you have lots of protein you need to pair that with LOTS of water cuz high protein diets are hard on the kidneys..I drink about a gallon of water  a day. thats on my accountability too.

I have reactive hypo too, and am a little over 2 years out. It sucks but if I avoid white carbs then I can avoid it entirely. I'd. Rather not have it, but it does help keep me honest. My goal weight was 175 and it am at 192. I'll get there, Ive been lazy for a while.

For me it's usually about breakfast. I can pretty much eat whatever I want at other times of the day--but I HAVE to have major protein in the morning, if I am too carb rich I am in baaad shape. Before I knew what was happening-- I once had cinnamon toast for breakfast--it was like I was on drugs! I have to be vigilant about not eating too much and getting enough protein. It can happen at other times of the day--but I think I am careful about protein to the point where it doesn't happen often. In the beginning I remember once eating a yogurt--that must have had too much sugar in it, I had to lay down on the demo bed at IKEA for over an hour to get over it!

I am now nearly five years out. Have maintained my weight loss, have perfect bloods, and run/lift weights 5 X a week....so I don't feel bad if I eat *some* chocolate or a cookie (just not for breakfast ;-) )

Hi, I'm 2 years post revision to RNY and I also have developed reactive hypoglycemia (about 7 months ago). The first time it happened really frightened me because I was driving and didn't know what was happening. I now can tell when it's starting so I eat a piece of candy and it usually helps pretty quickly.

Thanks for your reply. I keep glucose tablets handy. I also make sure I have enough protein and small snacks with protein. What is a revision to rny and why did you have tohave it? delphy
