Strange Symtoms...I am at a lost and worried.
Hot Flashes, shakes, very fast heart rate, shortness of breath.
These are my daily symptons....I had RNY in 2009. Lost over 100 pounds...feel great and then these symptoms start. Blood work completed...vitamins intake is normal no deficies except Vitamin D3...ok sunlight.
But what is causing me to feel like my blood sugar is at zero, I have been near fainting many times. I eat protein, and 10 minutes later the same issues. I don't get it. My surgeon says he sees no issues and refers me to a cardiologist...yea this person will check my heart....but what about the other symptoms...what the heck is going on?
If I eat anything with sugar in it my heart goes into over drive...beats so fast I get short of breath. The Dr.'s here are lost.
Anyone else have these symptoms....
Please.

Reactive Hypoglycemia might be the problem..constant blood sugar is the best way to go..If you're eating just carbs like bread, pasta, rice..and of course sugar..that will do it..if you pair dense protein with it or high fiber things, it will be harder for you to digest and slower so that the levels of insulin aren't so radical..
I'm sure your PCP can do testing for that.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

How D def are you? Vit D or the lack of can cause a multitude of symptoms....including the ones you're describing. Yes you need sun....however get yourself some Vit D sublingual drops (from drugstore) and take a dropper full three times a day and see if you feel better.....based on your D levels you may have tot ake more. I normally see a difference within hours. Feel better!
Welcome to reactive hypoglycemia. I have it too. It started around the 2 year mark. You can know for sure by checking your blood sugar when you are feeling this way...it will be L O W....
This cured me:
Eat 6 small meals a day, protein first, some veggies and complex carbs. Stick to the schedule, and carry things with you for meal replacement when needed (I always have slim jims, nuts and Kashi bars on hand).
Stay away from refined carbs (cookies, cakes, white bread, white rice....). This will usually bring on an episode for me.
When you feel this way, eat a few low fat Ritz crackers and some cheese.....does the trick for me.
It really is very manageable.....you just have to do your part....I don't dump, but knowing I'll have a RH episode keeps me honest (most of the time.....I still indulge on occasion!).
Talk to your doctor about RH.....I'll bet that is what it is.

I had a similar problem for several months, the closer I got to my "goal weight". I was still having some leg puffiness, and labs were great, so the doctors kept letting me on a water pill. My smart cardiologist took me off of the water pill and reminded me to DRINK alot (which I had stopped focusing so much on). Symptoms went away. Now months later, even if I take one water pill forpuffy feet/legs, I get the dizziness, etc within a few hours.
I have that if my sugar goes to fast in any directon. That's what it sounds like your having. To fast of a fluckation in sugar. If it's at a number and you eat sweets and it goes to fast up or donw, then you can get these feelings.
Do you have a sugar tester? If so test your sugar before you eat, then after a little bit and a little while after tha****ch what your bodies doing with it.
I would try to cut the sugar product your eating amount down lower and see if you get the same reaction, just as bad of a reaction, and just as fast of time.
Not all doctors understand sugar issues.
Be careful that your pancerious is not kicking in to much insulinn when you eat causing your sugar to drop to low to fast.
Those are the same soounds of sugar issues. If it's not possibly a certain food, and aleriges to that food.

THIS IS NOT TO DOWN PLAY YOUR SYMPTOMS BUT........
I'm having the same issues and I can relate it to my body's way of "dumping syndrome"....everyone is different..........but it always happens after I eat something that I shouldn't have or too much or yes - some foods with sugars.....etc....

- Pease check out Dr. Connie Stapleton's Website. A lot of good information on there for all WLS patients regardless of the surgery you chose. Good luck to all and I'm here for you if you want to send me an email. I'll answer it as soon as possible.

I have the exact same symptoms and I had my surgery in 2004. Several times, over the years, it has happened while I was at work...which happened to be a diabetic doctors office. After asking a nurse about my symptoms, we were sure it was hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). So, whenever I got the symptoms we would test my blood sugar and it was always normal. Even now, years after working in that diabetes center I have the same symptoms and normal blood sugar levels.
It turns out the symptoms are from dumping syndrome...except I get it with EVERYTHING I eat. It can be a broiled piece of chicken, salmon, everything.
Recently the symptoms have become so acute that I constantly feel nausea, dehydrated and have NO energy. After walking up 1 flight of stairs I feel like I am going to die. Not just out of breath, I am so nauseous, dizzy, shaky, and very weak. Running errands has become a huge task. Its more like errand and I must have a water bottle at all times. Drinking water is the only thing that keeps the nausea at bay long enough to get home.
In addition, my right side has started hurting and I have a constant stomach ache. My research online had me convinced I had a gall stone; apparently this can happen even if one no longer has a gall bladder.
Went to my doctor's office 11 days ago and after a urine test was told that my biliruben was higher then normal and I was severely dehydrated. I returned the next day for an iv infusion of fluids. Maybe it wasn't enough, but it had absolutely no effect on my symptoms.
My doctor also ordered an ultrasound and an upper GI with a small bowel through. The ultrasound was normal; ruling out a gall stone. My research on the upper GI told me the test would take several hours. I was done, however, in about 40 minutes.
Finally got results today. Doc says results indicate "generalized esophageal motility is sluggish and slightly ineffective;" something that is normally found in someone who is at least twice as old as I am. I have wondered why it feels like food often gets stuck; thinking I just needed to swallow smaller bites. However, this is not what was causing my symptoms.
The test also showed "rapid transit time through the small bowel." My doctor said whatever I eat or drink is being rushed through the digestive process. Not allowing time for proper absorption. The pain I feel is my intestines rushing food through.
Sadly, my doctor has no idea how or if this can be fixed; so she referred me to a local bariatric center. She did speculate that the worst case scenario would be to reverse my surgery. I will keep this in my mind as an absolutely LAST resort.
Hope to see a bariatric surgeon ASAP and get simple options to relieve my symptoms so I can start eating again. Water is refreshing but very boring.
My long answer to yours (and other questions like yours) is to keep an open mind, be tenacious and keep going back to your doctor for more tests, write down symptoms even if your not sure its related. I realized, when asked how long I've felt this way, I become tolerant and used to new symptoms. They just become part of my normal daily aches and pains.
Good luck.

Although I am sorry you have this, it makes me feel better that I am not going crazy. I have the same symptoms. I have to take protonix to deal with the pain in my stomach and I see a internist who has put me through colonoscopy and endoscopy, which showed that my esophagus is pretty damaged and I have irritation in the lining of my stomach. I don't have any ulcers, but the pain in my stomach is often excruciating.
I also get the dumps from eating any carbs, but I still have problems digesting regular meat. So, I suppose I could live on protein shakes.
I am trying to become tolerant, but sometimes I feel miserable.
Thanks for sharing your story.
