Hi all:

I have developed a medical condition and I am looking to see if others have had the same issue.

I am 18 months post op.  About 6 months ago I started to develop very serious headaches.  I have had all the necessary procedures done like a cat scan.  Now I am going to a neurologist.  She is having me keep a headache diary.  Someone at my job mentioned that this started after my weight loss surgery.  These headaches are actually starting to affect my job as it inhibits my ability to retain information.  This person stated that perhaps my body was lacking something.  My neurologist added magnesium and CoQ10 to the list of vitamins that I already take.

Have any of you guys had the same situation?  Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks very much!

Hi Teresa,

I am almost 5 years out and have started having headaches the past 6 months and have also had a cat scan, and MRI and have been referred to a neurologist as well.  (my appointment isn't until July 26th.)  Mine always start in the exact same spot and then grow from there.  It is interesting that it maybe a deficience, I guess that didn't occur to me.

One of the women in our local support group has also been having headache issues.  She is actually receiving botox injections around the forehead, neck and shoulder and this seems to be helping her.  (all of the meds that they tried didn't stop them.)

Let me know if you find out if it is related to our surgery and I'll be glad to do the same.

Take care,
Joanne

thank you for responding, I will do that.  In the beginning I went to a specialist thinking it was sinus issues.  That is where I had the ct scan.  All was normal.  I'm very thankful for that but it doesn't answer my headache problem.  Wonder if there is a test that they can do that will tell you what your deficiency is?

I know that Andrea U has headaches. Really bad ones.
I will get a headache if I do not have  BM.  When i am constipated. Or when i have some food indigestion. never fails.
Having regular BM ( that do not sit on me for 2 -3 days)  is critical to me feeling OK> And the headaches are debilitating.   I learn to deal with that by making sure I have BM (even if I have to use enema) in the morning.

due to the headaches - I also had to discontinue all artificial sweeteners.  They cause and effect was not as clear - but if I use splenda for 2-3 days - I will get a headache.   NutraSweet - some day or the next day.    From mild to severe. depends on how much I had and which type.
Now I use stevia. Or saccharin... if I do not have stevia...
Some food allergies - intolerance may also cause headaches.  And with the rerouted guts - we may be prone to develop food allergies.
You can test for that. Or try elimination diet .. (google that : food allergy elimination diet)
and so on..

It may be not only what you don't have enough, but what your body become sensitive too...

I had this problem with major headaches several years ago after losing a lot of weight. After a week in the hospital and major test it was determined that I got severe headaches when my blood sugar went to low. The problem was easy to fix and now no more headaches. I hope that you get your problem solved.

Thank you for responding.  What time of day did your headache**** you?  Mine seem to be first thing in the am.

You might be getting some early am hypoglycemia - sometimes it will dip around 3-4 am and then you wake up with an atrocious headache.

Or - sleep apnea can cause am headaches.

Or - neck problems can cause am headaches too.

Good luck...try about 4 oz of OJ before you get up and see if that helps!  That's easier than a sleep study or a neck MRI :)

Most of the time mine would be first thing in the morning and they would be so bad that I couldn't function for most of the day. My Dr. Suggested that my husband start bringing me a tall glass of orange juice to drink while I was in bed. This did the trick for me to raise my blood sugar levels. I soon would notice the signs throughout the day and ate small snacks to ward off theheadaches. Give it a try, it can't hurt you. Best of luck to you.
