I went through the anemia problem for two years before I started through menopause. I didn't get quite as severe as you, but was on Iron suppliments for a long time.
The effects of low iron makes you so tired that you can not do anything so weight gain is a problem. I hope you get straightened out soon. I did not have a hysterectomy, just natural menopause and found out that progestrone, not estrogen would have helped with my problems.
There is some sites on line that is called hystersisters. I visited them because I was interested in the best hormone replacement therepy available. Lots of good info there.
fyi, bioidentical hormone therepy works well. Made a world of difference for me.
I hope you get well soon. That excess weight will fall off once you become active again.

I am 8 years post op and just started my first round of iron infusions.  My first round is scheduled for 10 weeks.  I regained 90 pounds due to steroids and have lost 65 of those 90.  Do you feel better after your iron infusions?  More energy?

I had a series of iron infusions last year when my Iron level tested 2.1 - I feel like a whole new person - it was no big deal, lay in a recliner, take a nap, watch a movie or read a book. They will nudge you when you're done. Ask for a blanket (or three), I froze the whole darn time! Iron level is back to normal now, as well. I gained about 5 pounds right after the infusions but that wasn't so bad because I was below my 'ideal weight' at the time. Only 'down' side is I went from doing nothing BUT sleeping to now I CAN'T sleep - have to take sleeping meds or else I can't sleep more than 3 hours a night.

Hey girlie!  Long time no see :)

Was your iron 2.1 or your Ferritin?

Glad you're feeling better.  I think Im headed for iron infusions myself.  Will know after I see the hematologist on Friday...

Yep!  6 units of blood over 7 months last year!    Hang in their.  My count is up some but still has a way to go.  I post menapausal so that wasn't ever a consideration.

I am 7 years post-op and doing fine.  I had gained back 20 lbs. but with the help of a nutritionist, I have lost that and continue to maintain my weight.

2 years post-op I became anemic and was treated with a rx iron pill (chromagen).  I was taking large doses, yet my anemia never really improved.  2 years ago I went to a hematologist and had 2 rounds of iron infusion.  My hemoglobin is only slightly below normal now and right now there is no need for further infusions.

The infusions were much better than taking medications especially since iron and calcium cannot be taken together.  Since I needed to take iron 3 times a day and calcium 3 times a day, the infusion was a much better solution.

Good luck.

I had gastric bypass (RYN) in 2001 and then years later, in 2008, I noticed I was having trouble breathing, heart racing fast, feeling so tired....DR tested my blood... it was 5.6.  So he ordered 2 units of blood twice a week for next to weeks....

Fast forward, since then, my blood level is always below 8.  Since Nov. 2010 I was having Iron Infusion weekly and of course they test my blood count each week..but not good.  Almost every month since then, I've had to have Blood Transfusion....sometimes twice a month.  I've had scope done (both ends), it came normal, bone marrow testing, it came normal....Recently....My blood count was 8.1 on June 17th when I had the 2 units of blood transfusion and then come 4 days later on my regular Iron Infusion (they take blood test beforehand)....blood test showed 8.1!  I was like WTF???  I was like how can that be possible??  I just had another blood transfusion this AM,,,, count went from 8.1 to 6.7 in not quite 2 weeks....

Im getting tired of this crap....Wondering if gastric bypass surgery was a mistake since its costing me $$$ afterwards...and plus complications as well.

Hi Thanks for your post...I've just learned I'm anemic and still trying to find out why...I can't believe what you've been through. So sorry to hear all your trouble. Thank you for writing about it and giving all the info you can. We're still trying to find out why I am anemic but I have a feeling it's because of my VSG...I just don't' think I'm getting all I need to be healthy...I have a lot of test coming up in the next couple of weeks and hope to have answers. I'm taking iron and eating much better... I just emailed my doctor asking about b12 shots and iron infusions.
I hope you're feeling better since your post.
thoughts and prayers are with you.
Thanks so much again
