Eating Observation...

This weekend was my birthday and as always the celebration revolved around food. I'm not sure if every family is like this or not but my family's gene pool consists enirely of "foodies". We love to eat & cook. If we're not in the kitchen we're either in front of a cookbook or foodie program or the grocery store.

So Friday night was Pizza and a salad. No problem. Nice Salad. 1 slice of pizza. Ate at a local restaurant. I think that was the last/only time I ate from a plate for the remainder of the weekend. While we were cooking on Saturday at my Moma's I sampled and tasted my way through everything. By the time the family (all 31 of them) assembled for dinner - I wasn't hungry. I played hostess and rambled from room to room. Serving drinks and refills. Taking plates out of the way. I didn't think anyone noticed.

Breakfast this weekend has been protein shakes. Just because I found a cannister in the back of the pantry that I had forgotten about and that I didn't want to go bad.Yesterday was a big pot of ham and vegetable soup (gotta do something with all those leftovers). That was perfect for watching basketball & Nascar on a cold windy Sunday afternoon

My Aunt called yesterday - she'd watched me and was concerned. Does anyone else do that? Granted I would be better off to measure out my portions and focus on protein first but when we have the big events I'm still uncomfortable eating in front of everyone. I always feel like I'm going to eat to fast and then risk getting something stuck.......not a nice thing.

Once we have surgery, we are often under the microscope....everyone is watching what we are doing and waiting to prove that "surgery wont work either".  I am almost 2 years out, been in maintenance for a year, and someone commented to me the other night at Bunco about me eating a few pieces of chocolate.  I had to explain to them that I can have whatever I want in moderation.....besides, with the amount of exercising I do, I can get away with more than most.

I really understand what you mean about life centered around food!  Our life is like that--and I love to cook!  We often entertain and I will have sampled so much during cooking that I don't eat during the function....I do what you did....I play hostess!

Oh, and for those that are watching.........I truly enjoyed my vanilla cupcake with lemon icing last night!!!

Guess I'm lucky...I don't have family to contend with (parents are passed and brother sister live out of state...very rarily see). The 2 groups I do socialize with, most know I've had surgery and have been extremely supportative.  The one or two who don't know, don't know me well enough to ask or comment on my eating habits LOL  To those who do ask in reference to how little is on my plate...I just say I ate before joining the group for dinner.  I find looking them in the eye when I answer and saying no more...it makes it clear it's not up for discussion.  Isn't it interesting how people think it's ok to ask questions about what we don't eat....but knew it would be rude to say something about what or how much we ate before surgery?
Great observation Iris!!

I feel that way too.  I find that some people want us to fail.  They were more comfortable when we were fat.  My sister is going to have the surgery in the summer and I am already annoyed by her constant scrutiny.  She was not very supportive when I was losing weight and now she wants me to be her "surgery person" at the hospital with her.  After the annoying year that is ahead for me I hope she comes to understand how truly difficult this sugery can be.  The weight may come off fast but maintaining the weight is so hard and dealing with the food issues that remain is tough.  Hang in there! You are doing awesome!
