Iron Recommendations

Good morning. I am experiencing low iron levels - I am 5 years out next month. My iron level is 53 ug/dL and Iron saturation is 16%.  I have an appointment today with a hematologist to assess for iron infusion.

I am inquiring about iron supplementation. What do you use? Anything you have had particularly good results with?

Thanks in advance!

i'm 10 years out and neglected my labs for several years. when i did go in march of 2010 i did so only because i was hurting. lots of general muscle pain that i thought was age related (50+) but my iron was so messed up that they explained the red blood cells actually began to change shape and thus my pain. long story short they wanted me to do hospital blood transfusions but i said no and went with shots, and walgreen brand ferrous sulfate (325mg) x2 daily with orange juice to help with absorption. it took 9 months and i'm on one of the iron pills per day for maintenance. just had my yearly lab and all is well. i will not neglect this again. i really thought excercise/monitoring food intake were enough but not so. i now do regular labs again. though not as serious as iron, my b-12 and vitamin d were also horrible but now corrected.

The best are carbonyl iron. This one causes the least side effects. But remember - the iron needs to be taken with vit C, and at least 2 hrs away from any calcium or calcium rich foods.. or coffee or tea.. as well as other minerals an vitamins.

Heme iron - like in Proferrin ES doe not have the same restrictions and can be taken anytime even with calcium. And it has even better absorption ratio. The only problem - that is it rather expensive. I take it now - because all other irons (even carbonyl) hurt me and I had too many problems while taking them. Not only can I take them but my iron and ferritin are improving.

ferrous sulfate are the wrong iron for us. They are really hard on our anatomy and have a poor absorption %
