Topamax for migraines and weightloss

 Has anyone taken the drug Topamax? If so what was your experience with it.? Topamax is a maintenance drug for migraines but one of the benefits in my case anyway is that it causes weightloss.The down side (there is always a down side) is its many side effects. I was just wondering if anyone else has taken this med and what your experience has been with it.

Hello! I took topamax for nerve pain & ended up with cataracs from the drug. It also caused mental confusion & sluggishness.  I heard recently that is causes birth defects if you take it when pregnant. On the good side, I did loose quite a bit of weight while on it, but the side effects were so bad, I had to go off of it. Hope this helps.

 I have been hearing that the weightloss is phenomenal but the side affects are awful. My doc put me on a 25 mg tablet  daily at bed time but I was just trying to get some feed back from others who have taken the med and what there experience has been. I was having some side affects as well so I stopped taking it and from what I can tell I am not so sure it is worth it! 

I took topamax for migraines before weight loss surgery. I had some horrible side effects. My body started tingling so bad that I couldn't stand it. I didn't like the medication at all and it didn't help with the migraines.. I guess everyone reacts differently to meds.. I hope you have a better experience than I did.. Good luck....

The more I research this drug the more I think i will stay with my tylenol/advil regimen...

I took Topomax for migraines and seizures. I was on a lot of meds and the time (before wls surgery). After surgery, I was anxious to get off as many meds as possible. This was one of them. However, over the last year and a half, the seizures have started to return and are now occuring with increasing frequency. I fear that I will need to return to this drug. It did help some to reduce the frequency of my seizures, but I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn't need it badly. My experience? the weight loss is not reliable and is no motivation for this drug.

Hello, My daughter has been on topamax for over 3 years and she has done great, she was put on it for super bad migraines and she has lost 70 lbs plus, without any effort on her part. It is not this way for everyoe , but for her it was a god send.

 What milligram tablet is she on? Thanks for your input!!

Hello, My daughter started out on 25mg at night and 25 mg in the morning and they now have her on 100mg in the morning and at night, but she does have severd migraines, but it really helps. Have a good nite and good luck.
The way you lose weight is on the higher doses it does make you feel blah, so you don't feel like eating, the weight loss does not happen to everyone, some may say this drug has bad side effects but my daughtr will swear by it, but not everyone feels that way.
