Hi all.  Had VSG 3 years ago and got to goal weight of 158. Maintained for 2 years.  Last year I cared for my sister who lost a courageous battle with breast cancer and I lived on frequent meals of rubbish........discovered that i can eat a lot if i spread it out over the day. Help, how can i get back on track.

hi! i am over 5 years post op. I have also let my eating habits lean towards unhealthy, processed foods.  I can eat a lot too, and I constantly have to remind myself that "i am getting back on track".  I just started my self-hypnosis weightloss audio, putting protein first, and working on cutting down on carbs. I find it helpful to find people who are also on a weightloss journey to help me stay motivated to eat right and incorporate exercise.  so a constant mental reminder is what i need to eat healthier.

"I am currently getting back on track!

Hi Kath....it seems alot of us eventually start to slip but the fact we realize it and are trying to gain back control is a positive thing.  My condolences to you as well.  Now lets snap out of our coma and get back to taking care of us.  I joined WW which so far has helped me stay focused.  I lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks and go back tomorrow for a weigh in and feel like i lost more.. Good luck and lets support each other, all of us!

Kath,
Hugs to you and thoughts/prayers to you in regards to your sister.

So first of all you are normal. You were caring for your sister and life took over. You didn't put YOU first, you put your sister first and what a wonderful thing you did for sis, taking care of her in her time of need.

Now it's your time. Don't beat yourself up about regain. It happens and will happen again. When and only when your ready the weight will come off. Are you ready for you now?

I truly believe it's okay to "detox" your body of sugar and carbs. Not for long term though, one week max. Will it be hard for you? Maybe...and hey if so then eat. Tell yourself it's okay and don't beat yourself up. I like the EAS low carb protein shakes, drink it on a lot of ice.
Really you know what to do but here is also a suggestion.

I practice Mindful Eating, nothing off limits and always leave 3 bites on your plate...that's 9 bites a day, do this and you will lose 9 pounds in a year. Journal again. Drink your water and don't drink with meals. Exercise...at least 30 minutes a day. Open your mind in regards to mindful eating. It takes practice. I always post on the Over 50 Forum about Mindful Eating. Go there and look at some postings. It just may help you.

You are not a failure, you are a success. You are living life. Are you going to a bariatric support group? If not it's time to start again. Yes, we can all eat a lot if we graze all day long. You are not alone! Hugs Debbiejean

thank you so much.  I feel like a failure most of the time, but it has been hard emotionally recently.  I knowt the road ahead will have its ups and downs.  But I am going to go a bit easier on my self.  Pick myself and start again.  I think  mindful eating is a great idead.  I used to do it before but I think i just got into the habit whilst caring for my sister too just eat on the run and sugar was easy.

Time for me to start caring for myself again.

xx

Good for you Kath, it's your time now. The weight will come off in time. You are living life.
Please know that you are not alone, a lot of people have regain. It's up to us to decide how we are going to keep the weight off.

Are we going to go back on diets? Nope...diets don't work. We all "dieted" up to our highest weight ever. But we can practice Mindful Eating and exercise.

Now I'm not knocking anyone who ends up taking diet pills, WW, Jenny Craig...you all know that drill, once you stop the weight comes right back on. Aren't we all experts on dieting? Yes.
Portion control, exercise and not stressing about food....we do that then we are good. Eat treats? Just cut back the next day. Really start leaving 3 bites on your plate...and losing weight slow is good. No race...this is for our lifetime. We will always have to be mindful on how we eat, how much. We are not failures...ever. Your time now Kath, hang in there,  you know what to do. Debbie
