It's Been The Carbs All The While!!!
A light bulb just came on! I am almost 7 years out from my RNY. For the most part I never had aversions to any foods. However over the past year or so, it seemed that everytime I ate I would get really sluggish and sleepy. It never hit me until this morning that I was dumping and didn't realize it becuase I didn't have the normal "drunk/high" feeling followed nausea and carb coma I normally experience when I eat sugar and certain combinations of carbs.
I noticed that shortly after I eat things like oatmeal, cereal, grits etc that shortly afterwards I cannot keep my eyes open. I thought my blood sugar was too low...as it drops if I don't eat breakfast...or perhaps it was too high. I've had digestive issues, especially of late, and overall just generally not feeling well.
On yesterday I had a pea protein shake for breakfast. No only was it filling, I noticed I didn't get sleepy as I usually do in the mornings and, in fact, I had lots of energy. This morning I had one around 7am then 2 hours later I had a mini breakfast consisting of a scrambled organic egg, 1 slice organic turkey bacon and about 4-6 ounces of organic yellow corn grits. BIG MISTAKE!!!
Shortly after that, it was almost as if I passed out and about 45 mins later...I came to. I hate that feeling!!! Then afterwards I end up feeling sluggish as I do now. My blood sugar is normal but I feel awful. As I sit here and think back on the kinds of meals I prepare and how they affect me, I realized that when I eat raw/slightly cooked veggies and meat etc. I feel alive. I
f I eat a little brown rice I'm good but if I eat more than say 1/2 cup I may end up paying for it. Please believe me when I tell you that I didn't make this connection until my experience this morning...I'm absolutely flabbergasted! This is not like the usual dumping I used to experience and on occassion experience when I eat something new. Otherwise I avoid foods that make me dump. And all the while carbs have been doing me in.
I called my DH and said "I found the culprit...it's the carbs that are having an adverse effect on me!" He sweetly said "okay, we'll get them out of your diet." Did you hear that...WE. Of course I told him he doesn't have to give his up however I won't be cooking any for a while other than things like quinoa, a little brown rice...no pastas...spelts etc.
The other day when I said "back to basics" I had no idea what that really meant. Thanks OH family...you all encourage me so much.
Has anyone else experienced this?

Yup. White carbs are the enemy..
You can substitute pasta with all sorts of great stuff like spaghetti squash, shredded cooked cabbage, broccoli slaw mix (cooked, of course)..
And they have new little deals called sandwich thins that are whole wheat, whole grain, even seedless rye...instead of a burger bun or sandwich bread..or just wrap a burger in a lettuce leaf..works for me.
Congrats on discovering this cuz it's the same for me but I never came out and posted it like this..

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I hear ya - carbs are my weakness, too. I'm trying to cut them down as much as possible. My main source is the milk I make my Click protein shake in the morning with, plus the sugar free lattes from McDonald's. I've been slowly getting a bit snacky, gotta watch that, because what I like to snack on are carby things like crackers, popcorn, etc. I don't eat much at a time, but if I have a little 2-3 times a day it adds up, which is why I've been stuck for such a long time. We'll work on it together. :-)
