Dumping TOO easily

Nik encouraged me to post here.

I have RNY and am one of the unlucky ones who dumps. Found out while in the hospital that I dump. I continue to dump like crazy.

Lately I've had a bad flu/cold bug, and I always dump easier when I'm sick, but I'm starting to think this is getting ridiculous.

Do any of you dump MORE the further out you are? Did you figure out WHY? How did you combat it?

I'm to teh point where I don't want to eat anything at all because I hate how it feels to dump, and I seem to dump all the time.

Also, for me dumping is elevated heart rate, feeling of unwellness, sweating, etc. I don't get nausea or diarrhea or vomiting.

I had RNY in 2003 and still dump on occasion.  I deserve it every time.  Too much sugar, white carbs and not enough protein are a certainly.  Eating too fast also makes me dump.  It is one of the things that still keep me 'honest'!

I found that when I ate only the foods that are "best" and lowest in carbs and fat and highest in proteins, that I ended up just not eating. My own personal demon/issue that I have to work on. But for me, the only way to get in an acceptable amount of calories is to continue with the protein shakes, and my foods tend to push the limits of my sugar tolerances (9 g of sugar = usually okay).... since I'm still losing and not wanting to lose, I tend to not worry about the sugars. If I start to gain, I'll first be happy, since that's what I'm trying to do, and then I'll start to analyse my diet to eliminate foods that aren't the best for me. For now, though, I'm trying to figure out a way to maintain, and the weight started to drop off again at 29 months and has been dropping steadily since. I've lost nearly 8 pounds in the last month!

Hey Lithia,

i was wondering if you are dumping so much during your cold because your cold meds have hidden sugar in them, which could be making the usually "acceptable" amounts of sugar in the food you are eating too high making you dump more easily.

I think If i were you I would stick to mostly to protein shakes until the illness goes away, then start trying to eat again slowly.

I don't take liquid cold meds, they ALL make me dump.

Cold pills were easier tolerated by me earlier out, but now they ALL turn my stomach (different from dumping), so I only ever take them with food in hopes that my stomach will bother me LESS. But they don't have any fats/sugars in them by themselves.

I like my protein shakes, and they never bother me (23 g protein, 1.5 g fat, 1.5 g carbs).... but I'm at the point where I'm losing too much and trying not to get dangerously emaciated. At this point you can see every vertebrae in my back, my entire sternum and ribs, and the inner curves of my pelvic bones. I am on an "up the calories" kick, but of course that's hard. I also find that most of my meds won't absorb at all if I don't eat some kind of food with them.

But that is a good idea, to keep to the protein shakes and let the cold pass...enough time for calories later.

Luckily today it seems as though the cold is on the wane, and I'm out of cold meds anyway.

When you kick the cold to the curb then you can try to gain again.  For now just focus on the protein shakes and trying to maintain through the cold.

That's what I focused on today, mostly just protein forward choices, and when I did eat one of my foods that has been making me dump, I just ate it slower. Took 45 minutes and ate small bits. Generally I wouldn't take that long on a meal, but this is what I did this time. It helped.

I think you just described me.  Just bones on the top half. I too can see my sternum, ribs and vertebrea. Hip bones are visible!   But I still have plenty of fat my thighs and hips. I really did lose from the top down. Seems to have stopped at my thighs. Waist is not proportioned to the lower half. Tiny waist but  I have to wear relaxed fit boot cut jeans with a belt just to fit the thighs and calfs.   I dont dump but can feel the blood sugar swings and get loose stools if something doesnt agree with me. Sometimes foods I have eatten a hundred times "will get me."  I too can not use liquid cold medicines. Got the really bad cramps.   I fought a  cold for 4 weeks around Christmas.  Someone suggested a Neti Pot. Its basically saline and you rinse out your sinuses. I saw major relief the first day and the cold was gone in three. Sooo worth a try.

Thanks! Luckily the cold/flu seems to have mostly left me. Still have the sniffles all the time though. Will try the neti pot if the last of the sniffles don't leave me within the week. Having surgery on March 9th so I must be healthy!

Have you tried "pure proteins" only?  Eat one thing that is mostly all protein and then wait to see if it bothers you.  Try:  cashews, peanuts, cottage cheese, any type of regular cheese, one egg, or an ounce of meat.  Try Nestle's instant breakfast with no sugar added.  It is a cheap option for a protein drink.

I've been told not to drink while I eat.  They say that the fluid forces the foods through the intestines faster than we can process it so it makes us dump.

Weight loss surgery has saved my life and I would recommend it to anyone who has the strength to dedicate themselves to the challenging WLS lifestyle.  This is not the "easy way out."  It's the hardest way out.  "Easy" would have been to do nothing.
