NG tubes after ten years post op

I had open RNY ten years ago this August.  I've had a bowel obstruction in 06 and almost died.  I thought I had another bowel obstruction a week ago tody and had to go to the local ER.  While I was there, the surgeon on call requested an NG tube be inserted even though he knew I was a 10 year GB patient.  He told me specifically that because I was so far out that the NG tube wouldn't effect me.  They put it down my left nostril and it coiled up so they had to take it back out.  Then three nurses had to coherce me into reinserting it down my right nostril, which, after several minutes, I relented.  Within minutes of putting it in, as soon as they left the room, I felt burning in my abdomen which got increasingly worse.  I yelled for the nurse to come back in and remove it, which she did.  But, now a week later, I'm having nausea and gurgling in my stomach like acid and it isn't going away.  I'm wondering if the burning was actually from the tube accidentally puncturing my stomach lining and I'm dealing with the acid that is in my intestinal system.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Robin

P.S.  They still don't know if it was an obstruction or food poisoning from the restaurant I had been to an hour or so before i went to the ER.

And for the record, when they made me swallow the 'gastric gravel' for the barium swallow, it went through my intestinal system in a mere FIVE minutes!  By the time they took the first x-ray, I was having to run to the restroom.  It ran through me THAT fast!  Whoa!

Sorry I do not have an answer for you.  Really I can not remember what a NG tube is.  Pls refresh my memory.  I am almost six years out and have had no real problems.

Hope you get to feeling better.  Your pictures are great.  You look wonderful.  Pls tell me what the tube is.

NG tube is a nasogastric tube.

Hello,
I would like to ease your concern about puncturing your pouch... If the baruim swallow was done after your ng experience then a perforation would have shown up on that test.  I am a nurse and part of my job is to insert ng tubes and as an organization we are adding gastric bypass pts to the contraindications for insertion no matter how long out they are... too much risk for perforation.  Our organization does not do bariatric surgery and there is going to have to be alot of education, especially with our surgeons.

You should go back to your bariatric surgeon, if you can, to help you figure out what is going on... there are issues only bypass pts have that could be causing your symptoms... and please tell him about the ng tube.  You could have some irritation in the pouch from the procedure.

All the best

I was told no NG tube not ever.  They told me that a blind NG tube was dangerous becaused we've been bypassed.  It doesn't matter how far out we are, we'll always be bypassed.  I was told that if it is ever needed, they should do a scope where they can see where they're going.

Good luck to you.

I am scheduled for Vertical Sleeve surgery Wed, Feb 2nd. My surgeon says we should not allow anyone to scope us or insert NG tubes. We should call him or his hospital for any problems involving the stomach.
In an emergency he wants us to go to the closest hospital, but he wants them to give him a call before scoping.
I don't think you had food poisoning as it takes about 24 hours for the vomiting and diarreha to kick in.
Have you consulted your surgeon about your symptoms? It must be scary!  I hope you feel better REAL soon!!

My surgeon also emphasized no NG tubes ever.

I don't know what you're experiencing, but I think you should contact your surgeon tomorrow.  I hope you feel better soon.
