I am a RNY patient, had my surgery almost 8 yrs ago, and went from nearly 460+ lbs to 250
in about 2 yrs.  Dr. Ryland Scott, then @ UVA Medical in Charlottesville, VA. is very skilled, and talented surgeon, performed my RNY procedure laproscopically. My recovery was quick, I had no sickness, only occasional nausea, and a lot of soreness.   2 years out, my regulad Dr. saw fit to lower the dosage of my Thyroid medication, and changed my Rx to a a generic med(which I had always been advised againts). My weight loss came to a dead stop, and I began to slowly gain weight.   I hovered right around 300 lbs for 2 yrs.  Over time, I changed personal physicians a couple of times, trying to find a good one.
Last year, me weight fluctuated wildly, losing gaining between 12-20 lbs in a months time.   The Dr. refused to do tests, change/adjust medication,  I was finding I had less and less energy, I found doing simple things tired me out, it was getting harder every day to breathe. When went this Dr. for the last time, I had gained a total of 70 lbs in less than a year.
I decided to seek help elsewhere, and went to another Dr. (against my insurance)
The new Dr. did a simple physical exam, and found my thyroid was severely swollen, partially blocking my airway, ordered an immediate TSH panel, and told me to stop taking the generic medication immediately.  He saved my life, and I have lost about 20 lbs in less than a year.
My weight is currently 350 and I am now wondering if it is possible to have the Lap Band, to lose and effectively maintain the a healthy weight.   If anyone out there knows, if it is possible, and where I can find any information on this, please let me know!!!

I don't know anything about the lab band on top of an RNY--I guess I'd check with a surgeon about that, but wanted to 1) congratulate you for getting the doctor you need rather than just go with one who wasn't doing you any good and 2) encourage you.  I know that when the thyroid is involved, weight loss can be slow and difficult.  But I suspect you know that.  Does one have enough stomach to band after a RNY?

I am five years out from my RNY and am in the process of losing a regain of 22 pounds.  (not a thyroid problem but a "baking" problem!)  I am using a low-carb approach as it fits my focus on protein.  Things are slow going compared to the wls results, but more like a "normal" person.

Good luck with your journey.

Yes, you can have a lapband over your RNY or revision to a sleeve or DS.
You have lots of options so do your research.

I'm a revision, had gastroplasty in 1980. Almost 4 years ago had revision to RNY.
You know your body best and what you need. Maybe getting back on the right medication is all you need and not a revision. Good luck and hang in there. The weight will come off. Slow is okay, it's not a race. I bet now that you have the proper medication life will get better for you. Hugs Debbie

Thanks!  i will be looking into my options.  The drastic weight gain I have gone thru over the last year, has taken a big toll on me physically.  I have a degenerative bone/joint disease, and an in-operable spur close to my spine which presses on a major nerve,  as well as Scoliosis, and I am suffering a lot of back, joint, and muscle pain, as well as swelling of my legs.  The more weight I can get off, the less pain I have to deal with.  So, in a way it is a race, one that I can't afford to lose.
I am hoping that my medication can be adjusted so that the weight comes off without surgery, but I am at a point, I need it off as quick as possible.  Thanks for the info!!!
