OK, honestly I am by no means an expert on this subject, we did allot of research pre op and I do a  bit post, but I rely heavily on the experts here.  Luckily I'm pretty good friends with one of them :).
I had a WONDERFUL pre op doc, I LOVED him (my little cheerleader), then he left    :(,  but 2 years later he's back :), so I changed doc's, hospitals..... for him, but honestly I think some of these ladies are better than he is.  I had my first labs with him last July he drew: CBC, thyroid, cholesterol, chem panel and what I consider the important ones for us RNY'ers, Zinc, Carotene, A, Folate, Apolipoprotein B, A1c (I used to be diabetic), Iron, Ferritin, and B12, he actually forgot to run my D, amazing.   So make sure you get those drawn.

From what I see I would suggest that you start taking, C with your Iron and make sure there is no calcium around, add Zinc and a multi B, you can get that near the B12.  Do you take anything in the E or co-q 10 area??  You can get something called Cormega, it's for GBS patients, I also take co q 10 a few times a week, you should also look into the A's, Zinc's (I do a chewable that 's not bad), and a few magnesium and potassium's.

Again, I'm by no means an expert, but that's what I take and I have to ADD some vit's 3 years out and you are further out then me.

If you have any more questions post away, hopefully some others will post.

As far as the Yahoo groups. , what you do is go to www.groups.yahoo.com, then go to the gastric bypass area, there are 2 that give me the most info they are,  GBIC and OSSG (you MUST be over 1 year to post) that's the one Vitalady is very active with.

Thanks for all the suggestions!  And thanks so much for mentioning the Yahoo boards-- I never even thought to look over there.  Obviously you are getting several more labs than I am-- no one has ever suggested zinc or any of the A's or C or any of the other B's.  :(  Makes me worried about what else might be going wrong.

As a gastric bypass patient and cancer survivor, listen to me, this is your only body, INSIST that they do what you want, by going to them you are hiring them, you can just as easily fire them, you are just a patient to them, this is your LIFE !!! My hubby insisted on my chemo regimen and saved my life!

Good luck,

Edie

Wow!  Good for your husband!  My father also was the one that insisted my mother get help which led to her diagnoses with cancer (unfortunately, she did not survive).  The doctor's office had been dismissing her symptoms as "menopause" and possible "lymes".  She had stage 4 ovarian cancer. :(

I do need to turn this around, which probably means getting different medical service.  :(
If I'm out of my mind-- feel free to leave a message.

you might consider putting your question on the RNY board as well, we do have some vitamin experst there Kelly and Andrea for example, that will certainly jump on your question to help you!

I just told my doc she had to take these labs and gave her a list of what I wanted. (pre op just for baseline) If your doc won't do that, maybe it is time to look for another one

I hate to put it this way.. but no one *****sponded to you was 5+ yrs out..
your situation has changed.. that is what gastric patients aren't told..
the playing field changes about 3-4 yrs out. The nutrients actually do start to get absorbed.. I can't explain why but they do.. I am sure docs don't know why either and being lead by science they don't tell you this.. with the exceptions of Iron, calcium and D..
I take a d vitamin mega dose once a week.. I noticed the changes in my mood immediately.
I just completed my first iron infusion therapy. I was never told that Gastric bypass patience don't absorb iron in many cases at all till a nurse at the hemotologist office told me this.. that explained why pill after pill made no differences.
Calcium I am a little lost on and don't have must insite to offer.. I take a chewable but not regularly.. I drink milk and eat cheese and yogurt and that is level if  fine for me they say..
My doc says take a multi for the rest..
the theory of malabsorbtion forever seems to be a myth that is slowly being discovered but not widely acknowledged yet..
This surgery has been being done now for 30+ years. the problem is that drs' don't get to follow many patients long term as many patients go it on their own after the 2nd and 3rd years..
Good luck on your new adventure of discovering how this changes now at 4+ yrs out..

It's not true that you start to absorb the micronutrients like vitamins and minerals. What happens is that over time the intestines grow more vili and those are able to absorb more macronutrients (protein, carbs and fat). So eventually all the calories are absorbed (or close enough).

But vitamins and minerals are malabsorbed forever. That's because the part of the intestines that absorb certain nutrients are gone.
