Breakfast experiment for iron deficiency
Ok, I have been slowly nursing my iron levels back up. One of the 'better' iron rich foods is fortified cereal. But here is the deal, I recently tried this - a couple of days apart - and around 2-3 hours after eating I found myself kind of sick. Light headed, dizzy, like a dumping without the sweat. I am bummed because I really like the Smart Start cereal but obviously can't start my day with it. Anyone else have a similar issue??
Just curious ? What is the carb count ? That with milk I wonder ? I know I get really sick, if the carbs are too many. Just wondering.

hi, I'm over three years out and experience this more now than I did earlier on. I love Kashi go lean--per 1 cup it has fat 1gm, sugar 9 gm,fiber 5gm, protein 13 gm. Normally I eat 1/2 cup..with milk seems a good source of protein, but lately I don't tolerate sugar or simple carbs at all getting lightheaded, dizzy, sometimes sweating. I do better without the cereal now.
I have this same problem when I eat cereal for breakfast. It's my blood sugar dropping. I've tried eating cereal with more protein or drinking a protein shake before or with my my cereal, but none of that works for me. I know I need to eat mostly protein for breakfast. My usual breakfast is a scrambled egg, one slice whole wheat toast with promise spread.
I also take the iron supplement Vitron-C. I buy it at CVS but I've heard it's available at Rite-Aid, too. This stuff really worked for me. I've been iron deficient for years. When I decided to have RNY, this was the supplement they advised. At first, they wanted me to take 2 a day at separate times. I've been taking it everyday for nearly 4 years and my iron levels have been normal. Don't take iron with thyroid meds or calcium.
More protein, less carbs - that's my rule of thumb.
