I'm wondering if anyone here can help me. I'm a bit shocked. I applied for a private medical insurance policy for my self and my kids because we lost our insurance. I am 6 1/2 years post op. Weight is steady at a healthy BMI. Cholesterol is perfect BP is perfect I am a picture of health since my surgery. I was declined 2 times now both companies telling me they won't cover anyone who has ever had baratric surgery. I qualify for a HPPA policy but thats $500 a month when the policies I was looking at were $200 and if they weren't excluding for my surgery I would easily qualify. Anyone have a private policy that doesn't care after you are so far out. I thought this wouldn't be an issue because my life insurance didn't take it into consideration any more after you were over 5 years post op. HELP my kids and I are now uninsured :(

The first idea might be to separate the coverage.  That is, get insurance for your kids and then find something different for yourself.

I think the problem the insurance companies have with your WLS is they don't know how to classify your risk.  There probably isn't enough data to properly underwrite your policy.  Your state may offer a high risk pool or other options.  In Wisconsin the program is called HIRSP (Health Insurance Risk Sharing Plan).

I was offered a policy in a high risk pool but that was over $500 a month. I simply can't afford that. I find it rediculous tat I'm in great health and my surgery was so long ago and this is still an issue. Thanks for the advice. I'm making some calls trying to find a company that doesn't exclude for past baritric surgeries.

I have heard of policies that make you wait 5 years out from WLS. But I don't have names. I'm just mentioning it because I think they are out there if you keep looking.

Self-pay for BCBS, Cigna & Humana isn't going to happen. I should know. All three denied me. Most states do have pricy policies but as you stated they are $$$ and usually comes with a high deductible.

There is free program that wily "X" amount of dollars toward COBRA, if you have it.

Good luck!
