5 Years out and have slipped!

I had gastric bypass done o 1/3/2005.  I lost a total of 175 pounds.  I have since gained about 50 of it back.  Just within the last year and  a half.  Im not making excuses.  But I do know alot has to do with addiction.  YOu see Food was an addiction, then came alcohol and the whole time I was smoking cigerrettes.  Well I hve been sober one year as of April 16.  I quit smoking 3 days ago.  I am sicker than a dog right now.  Part of the nicotine withdrawal symptoms.  Anyway, I need to get my butt back in gear.  I feel so tired all the time and no energy to do anything.

I want to get this 50 lbs back off and Im very worried that I am just stuck like that.  I have tried the 5 days pouch diet....I thin kthat is a joke.  Didnt work for me.  Any suggestions on what to do?  How to get started again?  I have contacted the doctor that did my surgery to possibley get an appointment with him to see if he can get me back on track, but I would like to hear  your suggestions as well.

Thank you in advance~

Stephanie

I'm beginning to think, my response and the responses of others should be made sticky.

I'm not being mean; but; the question has been asked and I've answered it the same way every time and others will likely give their same answer as well.  Here is goes:

You need to do two things:

1) Eat less
2) Excercise More

I admit, you can do HALF of what I suggest but you will get half of the results as well.  I would suggest 800 calories per day with 100g protein coupled with 30 mins of cardio 5 days a week.  Once you reach your goal weight, figure out how many calories would maintain that weight and then eat that many.  A food log of some sort will be most helpful.

It's been nearly 4 years since surgery for me and, to this day, I'm still never hungry.  HOWEVER, I always want to eat.  Knowing the difference between hunger and the addiction is key.  In general, if you think you're hungry but not enough to eat carrots you're not hungry.

Just remember: there is no fate but that which YOU make.

Very true.  Beginning tomorrow I will journal.  and maintain 800 calories per day with 100 g protein figured into that 800 calories. I will get my put to 24 hour fitness and get 30 minutes to 60 minutes of walking in.

I know what my problem is....its not exercising, finding excuses and not planning my meals out.  Well its time to take control of me again!

Your reply was not taken in haste....but good measures.  I will check in often and keep updated.  I know when I had my surgery done, I was on the site from the time I woke up til I went to bed.  Got many tips and made many friends.
I have lost my way, but now I hope to be on the correct path.

Thank you and God Bless~

For me it's all about white carbs. For most of us that's what got us fat and not eating them gets us thin. I'm not talking Atkins, but just flour, sugar, rice, pasta, potatoes.

I had to quit eating sugar completely so that I could quit getting the white carb cravings..The more I stay away from those things, the less "pull" they have on me.

I'm nearly four years out too. I walk alot more than I did but I don't exercise, per se. I park further from the store and walk further rather than pick up the phone. Eat less and exercise more does seem too simple but it's true. But the addiction to carbs and sugar is just as important..especially if you know you are addicted to those things.

For me, the absolute problem in my house is chocolate chip cookies. They absolutely have to stay out of my house..most anything else I can say no to. But if I can't say no, it just can't be here.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Congrats on realizing you need help. I am 4 years out and gained over 50 lbs (closer to 60 I think). I am sorry it took me so long to realize I had an issue. So last week I was tired of feeling fat. Of seeing my small clothes  in the closet. on dreading putting on jeans and shirts and how they fit (or didnt in a lot of cases). So I tried South Beach Diet. I have been on it for 6 days and lost 8 lbs. I have a back injury that I am recovering from and can not exercise (or lift or bend) for a few more weeks. I think I might try the pool at the gym so I can get some movement in. But to be honest the first 3 days were bad and now  I am feeling better. I feel like I can be successful again. Do I have cravings... of course. Do I want the bad stuff that made me gain my weight.. Hell yes. Do I want to worry about my health, or getting diabeties again... HELL NO.

You need to pick what works best for you. Protien and veggies must always come first. There wont be room for anything else.

Good luck and if you need anything please don't hesitate to contact me.

Stephanie it is very easy to slip into bad habits.   Take it slow and start with one thing to cut back on then go to the next thing.  Also  see if there is a support group nearby, there will always be strength in numbers so to speak and I am sure that someone else went through or is going through what you are going through right now.  Keep a positive outlook and dont get to discouraged. Good luck, Barry

First of all congratulations on being sober one year!! That is an amazing accomplishment. Second, congrats on quitting smoking. Another huge undertaking for your health and well being.
My advice is that you've taken on a lot of lifestyle changes lately. Starting with the weight loss surgery, then quitting drinking now cigarettes. Each hard to do by itself, but you're doing all of it and trying to achieve lots of goals, and you have to decide which to concentrate on right now. If you have the drinking under control, then work on quitting smoking. When that's a bit easier (and as a former smoker I know how hard it really is!) then start back on losing some weight. You've done a fantastic job working on you. But we can get too much on our plate and then we aren't committed 100%. Take each thing you want to do and do it separately. When we take on too much then it all falls apart. One thing at a time, and one day at a time. You're doing great - keep up the good work.
