head count for Reactive Hypoglycemia?

I have come across some older threads but was wondering how many people post op are having this problem?

I have been experimenting and doing some at-home research lately.  I know 2 of my triggers for sure but haven't tested my blood sugar at it's worst because I just got my glucometer.

8am coffee (regular) made in my Keurig, 1/2 tbsp of splenda, 2 heaping tbsp benefiber, sprinkle of cinnamon, 2 tbsp of fat free 1/2 and 1/2

8:45am this morning I had steel cut oats (without milk).

9am Started to feel shakey ~ 1 hr after eating- blood sugar measured 116.

10:15am blood sugar was 67 and I was extra shakey and getting fuzzy.  I didn't have the "pleasure" of waiting any longer because I needed to get ready for work.  SO I ate a piece of cheese/whole grain toast and a peanut butter/whole grain toast to stop the shakes.  I wouldn't have been able to shower had I not nipped the crash in the bud!

I have had it get worse where I thought I was going to faint.  It was probably around 2-3pm before I felt "normal" again and wanted to eat.  I have been so shakey before I had trouble getting ready and couldn't shower or get dressed.

My trigger foods so far--
whole grain/high fiber cereal with 2% milk
oatmeal-rolled and steel cut with or without milk and regardless of mix-ins (splenda, dried cranberries, sliced raw almonds, candied walnuts, cinnamon, flax seed, or buckwheat honey)

I can eat all the junk food-chips, candy (up to 20 grams) and snack things without any probs.  I need to eat at least every 2-3 hrs to keep me from getting yucky feelings normally.  I rarely have full blown immediate dumping.  The 2 times I can think of---cup of milk and ice cream.  As long as I keep the ice cream to under a cup I rarely have problems anymore.  Same with the milk very small glass.  So not sure if it is a dumping thing or lactose thing.  Yogurt and cheese have NO reaction.

I am wondering if the coffee has any revelance?  I may experiement 1 day next week--when I have extra time before work and skip the coffee, eat the trigger food and see what happens.  Test blood sugar before, during and after.

I was wanting to be healthy for breakfast and lower my cholesterol but cereal and oatmeal won't be doing the trick.

When I was pregnant and did my post prandial blood test (after a meal at IHOP that included coffee, eggs, pancakes/syrup, bacon and hash browns) it was around 50-60's but I wasn't fuzzy/shakey feeling that I can recall.

Thanks for your input!

I have it but I have it under control. No carbs (even good ones) without more protein than carbs..it works for me. No pancakes. No white bread, no white pasta, no white rice, no oatmeal (anymore!)..all those white carbs are bad for hypoglycemia.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I get it sometimes but usually am able to control it by eating more frequently and making protein my first choice, then a little bit of complex carbs.

We have about 8 yrs of archives on this.

Most of us carry PB crackers now.

For me, if I have more potato than protein (meat), I may as well schedule it. Or if I eat bread first.

The other things, not so much.

But it is miserable AND dangerous

Thank you!  Will check out that group!

I skipped coffee this morning, had an egg mcmuffin while picking up groceries in Walmart before work and then had wheat chex/milk for lunch NOT one shake or fuzz.  It just seems to be affecting my 1st meal of the day.  OR it could be the coffee 1st.  Will test that theory next week at home surrounded by FOOD to fix the possible crash.

Hi Shannon,

Oh yeah, I have reactive hypoglycemia. It's almost always because I've had too many white carbs during the day. It will often strike about an hour after I go to bed - which the cure is usually a spoon full of peanut butter. it's hilarious - but I can eat a sugar donut w/ no issues 90% of the time, but eat a bite or two of cake - and I'm done for. Our body just handles straight sugar different than carbs that turn straight to glucose. Like everyone has said - protein first, carbs in small doses second.

Another thing to help us stay on plan. :o)

I WISH my problem was the white carbs!  They have NO affect on me.  It is when I have high fiber healthy whole grains --wheat chex, steel cut oatmeal

Haven't noticed the problem with any other food choices.

I had another bowl of wheat chex before bed last night and NOTHING nada zip zilch happened

of course wishing it would help with my constipation.  I think for me something must be going on with the combination of morning coffee and low sugar meal right after in the morning.

The only thing I have found to have any (limited) success with my constipation is morning coffee with benefiber, relax for a bit--then I can "go" and then eat bfast.  IF I alter any of the process NOTHING is happening.  Weekends with the kids home rarely stay regular.  Even if I try to have cup of coffee "relax" then eat.  Guess you can't pretend to relax keeping up with a 2 and 4 yr old.

I've had to divorce oatmeal over this very thing....

Be happy.

Please add my name to the list. Had bypass 7 yrs ago and 2 yrs out I realized I had Hypoglycemia. I manage it by taking glucose tablets when it hits. My doctor did a whole work-up and gave me the diagnosis. She also prescribed a medicine called Precose. The generic is Acrabose. I take it with meals 3 times a day and it seems to take the edge off. Well worth looking into. I take Hypoglycemia in stride. I don't like it but if I didn't have surgery I surely would be diabetic by now, or maybe even dead. It was still a good decision.

I see people are using food for crashes. I find Glucose tablets are an easy way to bring my bloodsugar back up. I have some in the house, the car and my pocketbook. Pop 3 of them, wait 5 minutes and it's back up
