What kind of iron is the most absorbed ?

That is so sad. I think I hear that daily. Some ppl cannot be tied to infusions for life.

It can take 2 yrs to find the right iron and dose that your body wants, but it is SO MUCH BETTER than being tied to infusions.

When he said you cannot absorb iron, he mans, (1) from food. True. (2) from the wrong supplements (a) taken wrong dose, wrong type or the wrong way

it doesn't preclude the right supps, taken appropriately. But that's all trial and error. You 'n your body since the docs can't get in your body. It took us about 2 yrs to find the right combo to keep us. Iron around 100, ferritin 200-300

Sciheduled for repeat ferritin level & cbc on friday. That old tired worn out feeling has returned. I'm fine when I first get up (around 5a) and by 8:30 - 9a, I'm totally worn out. Feels as if my legs are not going to hold me up. Hopefully my insurance will be changing in April to one that will pay my surgeon and I can go back to him or at least one in my area and get his take on it all. I have tried rx iron that is suppose to be easy on the gastric system, no results with it either. I have a  friend who had gbs 6 yrs ago. She has had problems with low iron/ferritin for about 4 years. Her hematologist (not associated with mine a tall) tells her the same things. Supplements are a waste of money for her. She has had 3 infusions. Seems like the farther out she gets, the longer her levels hold. Maybe I too will hit it lucky!

If you were using:
ferrous sulfate
ferrous fumarate
ferrous gluconate

and your levels continued to drop, it's because those forms are not well absorbed by us.

Any iron has to be taken with vit C, at least one hour away from anything else, including caffeine, dairy, egg, whole grain and any other vites, minerals or meds

If you never used an absorbable form of iron, taken properly, you'll never know if you can sustain on your own.

My surgery type is particularly prone to iron issues, and my contemporaries who started early with a hema are utterly dependent on infusions, because they were told not to bother. Those of us who never were referred and just dinked around with iron types and dosages are doing great.

I see a hema for non-WLS issues and when I say this stuff, he looks at me like I'm nuts. But, OTOH, he can't figure out how I sustain such good levels without infusions. It doesn't fit together with his text book learning.

Largely he had not heard of the irons I use, but he is fast becoming educated. It's hard to argue with 5 yrs of the same levels consistetly.

Our bodies didn't like the rx irons, either. We were taking 3 of them, all together 1000mg elemental iron and still falling. We ended up with this ultra cheapo version of carbonyl iron and hold our numbers consistently.

One of my friends used herself for a guinea pic. She went into her WLS with seriously low levels ("a little anemic", as they say), so had weekly shots (not infusions). Challenging the system, she faithfully took a ****tail of 2 irons totaling 300mg elemental iron (which is 4x more than the 325mg iron you see in your mind). Her shots got further and further apart and after 3 years, she was done. Iron holds now at around 90, ferritin reached over 400, then drifted down toward 250 and stays there.

It CAN be done.

Your body will only absorb what it needs so don't worry about too much. As a nurse we tell patients to take ferrous sulfate with a full glass of OJ before or after meals. If that doesn't work go and get the liquid version. Before bed works best with vitamins, you don't have to taste it and your tiny tummy can concentrate.

Thank you Alexis. I love your name. That is my baby grand daughter's name. Plus we are both from the Pacific NW. I live on the OR coast.

Is this the same with VSG patients as well as RNY? It's so hard for me to fit everything in. I do take my iron with OJ, but I can't take it with my PPI or anywhere near my calcium, so it gets so tricky.  I can't drink much OJ as t does upset my tummy.
