Weight Regain
I am so disappointed with myself to be here, posting this after having such initial success with my surgery. I started out at 311 and lost down to a low of 141 - which I felt was too skinny, so I started eating more to quit losing - I stablized around 150-155 and was quite happy there. This past summer, I had a total hysterectomy (ovary removal too) and I have not been able to quit gaining weight. I am up to 190 pounds and the depression is really starting to kick in. I don't know what to do. I can't seem to quit grazing... where did my will power go???? I'm scared! Help!!
I cant tell you how glad I am that I'm not the only one feeling this way. I am 10 years out and up until about a year ago all was right in my world, and then boom,PERIMENAPAUSE hit with a vengence. I have gained about 25# in the past year and I feel like a complete failure. The really bad thing is I cant seem to find the energy or the desire to do anything about it. I quit smoking about 2 months ago and while I'm sure that has'nt helped with the weight loss it has'nt hindered it all the way either. When I talked to my gynocologist about the hormone implications she offered no advise or answers.I'm 47 and hoping like never before that there is an end to this insanity. good luck to you and finding the inspiration you need to doyou need to do.
Hello, I just wanted to give you an encouraging word today. I know how bad it feels to have gained some weight... we all see folks post "I lost X lbs and have gained X lbs." There is such a fear and also feeling of failure. But, please do not allow the guilt to take over.
Keep in mind that diet mentalities in the days prior to our wls kept us ridden with guilt, and it led us to giving up. Now, we don't have to give up because, we're not on a diet. This is our new way of life. There are days I struggle in making the right choices too, and some times I win, sometimes I lose... but don't give up.
Tomorrow morning, get up and realize its a brand new day. Start over, but tonight sit down and make a plan. Plan your food, measure it out if you have to... get rid of all the junk around your desk, in your house, car, cupboards, etc. That way you will not have ready access to all of it. Then it will not be able to tempt you as much.
Another thing, hormones, hysterectomies, all of that "woman stuff" can really play some tricks on our bodies. I think the first year is very difficult, and many women do gain some weight. You might want to talk with your doctor about any hormones you are taking, and see if he can change them, or perhaps suggest some supplements to help your metabolism. don't give up, hang in there!

Sometimes the guilt and disappointment not only paralyze us - it drives us to the place we DON'T want to be.
Since the weight gain has come with the hormone issues I think it's great idea to talk with your doctor.
However -there are some things in our control - including what we choose to put in our mouths and how we choose to move our body.
So - I encourge you to get some exercise... get the body moving and fall in love with how your muscles work all over again. It will relieve some of the stress, distract you from eating, and help you feel good about what you are doing.
Then, remember when we had to lose some weight before surgery (either on our own or through a liquid diet)... I thought ... if I could do this on my own - I wouldn't need surgery. But somehow I managed - as did you. I was amazed how just stopping the sugars quieted the desire for them. So - try to committ to a short term purge of all of the sugary/snacky foods you are eating. Just for a day or two or a week - commit to stopping the grazing.
Another suggestion - get some help. If there is a good counselor in your area (ask your surgeon's office) - be open to that. If you can't find or afford help that way - consider all of the book options. I've found "It ain't over 'till the thin lady sings' and the "The Beck DIET solution Weight Loss workbook" both to be enlightening and encouraging. I'm sure there are other books too.
I'm struggling with you... I'm still maintaining in a place where I am comfortable and happy - but my snacking is getting out of control, and I need some new strategies for winter....
Best wishes - hang in there - we can do this!!!
