Here..and scared

Hi everyone!

I'm here..crawling back ...why on earth did I ever leave?  I was 2 years out a few weeks ago..and have regained 22 pounds.  I liked 150....but I'm hovering around 172.  I had a slight regain this time last year but was able to get rid of it...but over the last 6 months this has happened.

I need to revamp..get back to what worked.  Leave the carbs and sugars alone.

I'm a workout fanatic...but I was before surgery too..so that's never been the problem.  I run about 25 miles per week..weight train, tae-bo...you name it..I'm game.  But I NEED to get MY FREAKING MOUTH UNDER CONTROL!  I did NOT go through this surgery for nothing!

Ok...done.

How's everyone else doing?

I'm sorry you're having trouble with re-gain.  I don't know why we ever go back to eating carbs and sugars. Please please please decarb yourself and your home (if possible).

Best of luck to you.

Now if you're sure that what you have gained isn't muscle from all that working out the following is strictly my opinion:

We go back because we are human and those carbs and sugars are extremely addictive. Yes, addictive. My recommendation to you is to throw moderation out the window and cut out whatever is something you can not quit eating. Whether it's sugar or white carbs like bread and pasta...whatever you are not in control of has to go..The longer you stay away from it, the easier it is to just say NO.

for me it was sugar.

Then get thee back to support group. That's another thing that is highly recommended. It's one thing to confess to cyber friends but to look in a person's eye and tell them what you need to do and what you should do is another thing entirely.

I've spoken to alot of post ops who are 4 to 10 years post op and if they have slipped, they tell me it's getting back into eating the stuff they can't control and the ones that are still right at goal share my opinion above..support group and getting out the things that you just can't seem to say no to.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Before Surgery: 214
Highest Weight: 240
Now: 125.6
Goal: 130

I am certain it's not muscle...as I lost weight post-op it was more of an uncovering what was underneath the fat instead of building new stuff...like I said..I worked out 6 days a week before surgery..for years.

It's carbs..its sugar...it's thinking I was 'fixed' if you will..and that my working out would save me.

I sat my husband down this morning and told him my concerns.  I went to the store this morning and bought the things I used to eat...the things that worked.

You know what I think was a big thing for me?  As a serious..very regular runner...I read TONS about running..and they preach CARBS CARBS CARBS because you use so much running.  So I started with that..the carbloading before a 12 miler....eating that bagel in the morning for juice on my regular runs.
The funny thing is...my first year out..when I was just learing to run....and didn't read so much about it...I didn't do the CARB thing...and I didn't gain weight.
And I need to keep in mind that the majority of runners...are NOT wls patients...so the rules are different.

Anyways...thanks for the replies guys.  I'll think about the support group...the one I attended I did NOT like...it was all about makeovers and freaking pant sizes....and that's not what I needed.

I am so sorry you are going through this.  I really appreciate you sharing it with us.

I am about 18 months out and weight loss has really slowed down.

I am at 150 and am afraid of regain.  I follow the rules, most of the time. but I read a post

like yours and I dont want this too happen to me.  If you look back, do you think its the carb

loading that did it?  I cant eat a bagel if I wanted to, it would make me sick.  I listen to what you

are saying, you work out (like I do) and you had a regain, but lost it.  I know it sounds simple, but

is it really what you put in your mouth?  The carb loading?
.
I really hope it is simply going back to the rules.  Please come back and let us know what you

are doing and how you are doing.  Like you, the support group was a mess for me.  I would not

go back.  I find this board is really a help and I love Dawns posts.  You can do this!  You

exercise, which is half the battle (getting ready to go to the gym now).  Congrats on all the

running.  I plan on starting 5K's in the spring.

The only real thing I can attribute it to is what I shove in my mouth...and it started with the idea of needing to eat lots of carbs to burn while running.  Also when you do distance running...you want to eat anything in sight...at least I do.    I'm burning some serious calories when I'm out running for 2 to 2.5 hours...which I do once a week..and an hour plus 3 other days a week.

So I've totally decarbed yesterday and today.  Concentrated on my protein...thinking of keeping my calories under 1500 on the days I don't run...thinking about around 2000 the days I do.  I've never gotten a caloric guidline from my surgeon so I'm kind of flying blind there...any ideas on that would be welcome.  I have a 2 hour run planned for tomorrow morning and i'm going to do a protein shake and a bannana in the morning...and then dried fruit while I'm out...and see how I feel.

I only weigh in once a week so we'll see how the next week goes...I'm kind of excited..which is exciting..LOL.

Now I am learning from you!

I would love to be able to do the running you are doing, that is amazing!

I have found, for me, that I was following south beach (like we were taught to do, by my surgeon) but my calories were up.  Eating good things, just too much.  I keep my calories at 1000-1400 a day doing south beach.  I do the protein shake or protein bar in the morning before I work out.  I always have either a cheese stick or extra south beach protein bar in the car for after my workout (sometimes some beef jerkyor nuts).  I find if I have it in the car I am good.

I do weigh every morning, I can know if I am up because of what I ate (sodium), my period, etc. .  I do it the same time everyday  in my underwear after I go to the bathroom.  I have a calendar I write down my weight so I can track it.  I also write it down in my little book that I write down what I eat everyday.  Many people use Fitday to track their calories.  Once I started learning what things were, it became easy.  Many times I would just type it into google to get a caloric number, if I couldnt remember.  I have found keeping track keeps me good.  During my period I dont write down my weight (I am not going to make myself crazy.

These are a few of the things that i have found work for me.

Looking forward to hearing your progress.  Keep us informed.

I am excited for you, this is great.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Sincerely,
Melissa

Thank you so much Melissa..

So i did a 10.5 mile run today..on no carbs..and it felt great!  Took me a hair under 2 hours so my time was ok...I took raisins and ended up stopping and getting a G2 along the way.

I've logged my food the last 3 days..but right now..i'm only at around 1000 calories today...and I burned roughly 1200 on that run....

You can totally do the running that I'm doing!  I went from never running in my life to running a 5K in 3 weeks!  I did a very modified Couch to 5K program and went from there.  There is nothing in the world like it..wish I'd discovered it years ago.  My blog on here goes thru when I first started running.

I'm actually looking forward to Thursday *weigh day*

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Kim:

I was so good to read what you wrote.  I agree we need each other.  This is my "support board".  I dont know what I would do without it.

I am so glad you have been doing well over the last 6 days.  Four Pounds less rocks!  You are only 9 away.  You can do this!

Its so important to stay focused, and stay on track.  Its so easy to get off track.  I just have seen it recently.  Was down to 150 then up to 153. If I am not weighing everyday and watching, I get myself in trouble.  Even on days I dont do so well (Thanksgiving coming up), I know that Friday I will get back on track and stay lean.  I look forward to hearing more posts like yours.  It really helps for us to encourage one another.

WE can do it!
