LAB TARGETS

This is NOT medical advice, just my own targets for the main blood levels I watch.

Protein: 7's

Albumin: 4's

Pre-Albumin: 20-30's

Iron: 80-100

Ferritin: 200-300

HGB: 12+

HCT: 36+

Vit A: 60- 80

Vit D: 80-120

Calcium: 9.0-9.4

PTH: 20-40

Vit B1: Mid to top of range

Vit B6: Mid to top of range

Magnesium: Mid range (but also go by if we have leg/foot cramping)

Zinc: Mid range

Vit B12: 1000 +

Folate: Top of range

AST (sgot): Below 40

ALT (sgpt): Below 40

We usually want to "meet or beat" pre-op levels. In some cases, higher is better, and in other cases (Cholesterol, PTH for example), lower is better.

The only things *I* don't mind being on the high end of out of range are Ferritin and B12. But that applies to ME.

My doctors don't show interest in any of these until I am out of range. *I* am interested when I begin heading that direction.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I have my first appointment with my primary on tuesday and although she helped a great deal in getting me approved for surgery, I'm not sure if she has dealt with RNY patients before. I think she will be responsive to my concerns though.

Michelle:

Thank you so much, this is so great!

My primary is ordering my bloodwork the first week of December.

She said if I had any guidelines, bring them to her.

This is just what I needed.  I really appreciate it.

Mind you those target ranges are MINE, nothing official, tho I've some research to have pointed me that way, of course.

The labs I list are a combo of labs drawn by various docs around the country, combined. So, not my idea, but somebody's. LOL

I'd have dropped them off the list if they came back consistently "fine", but since they have not......

Thanks for the diagnosis codes! My doctor gave me an order for a blood draw and it has 285.8...close enough for anemia unspecified for me...They are alittle concerned over my iron because it's going UP...

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

What don't they like? The serum iron moving? Top of that range is like 170?

Not on this list...not sure why but it's not been on any of my labs. I better check the originals and see what happened.

I'm not sure what she didn't like. Maybe she wants to get a ferritin level or something. She didn't say, exactly.
