Returned--Regaining Weight

Hello All!

I had RNY Gastric Bypass (lapriscopic) almost 2 years ago and as of this past May was down to 145, however I have managed to bounce back up to 165 since then and I am panicked.  My boyfriend is planning to diet with me and we are focusing on a high protien and reduced carb diet and exercise, but I am so worried that he will be more successful than me and that I won't be able to break my carb habit.

I know that part of my problem is that I have fallen back into some of my pre-op habits and that some of this is agitated by medicines causing the "munchies", but I don't want to use that as a crutch or an excuse.  I know I need to exercise, but am so sluggish in the mornings from the same medication that I am finding it hard to get going to the gym in the morning.

Does anyone have any suggestions for kickstarting myself back into the healthy pre-op habits I know I need to return to or for getting past the sluggishness and munchies that I need to puch through.

Thank you for any feedback and suggestions.

De-carb -- munch on protein.  Are you getting enough protein?  Do you drink protein shakes to supplement?  Are you taking vitamins and calcium, etc.?

In order to lose wt on my 3rd regain, I had to go with protein only. No carbs. I already do 180g in supps per day and had to go to "if it doesn't walk swim or fly, don't eat it" and it did work. I kinda suffered for 3 days, but then I felt SO MUCH BETTER. Like a weight had been lifted off me. I've stayed way low carb since then, because it feels soo much better.

I also don't know which food might be my next "gateway drug" and I'm not willing to have to work that hard to get it off again.

Unfortunately, carbs beget carbs. The more you get the more you want. It's a cycle that is hard to break. I'm not referring to veggies and fruit in this sense, but the "whites" and sugar.

However, to break the cycle, it was cold turkey carb-less. I got about 20g in my drinks, sauces for the meats, but that is an acceptable amount and they were incidental to the things I was sposta be eating. I lost my excess, but then I broke my arm and lost a bunch more. I finally figured out I was only eating "one handed foods". LOL Once I could eat normally again, I added back in the complex carbs. I've not been able to add back in simple carbs without a reaction, however, so as much as I want to dive head first into the biggest baked potato on earth, I'll pay dearly 3 hours later. So, I don't.

It's not that I can never have sugar again, of course. It's just the first bite I can't have.

Michelle,

Thank you SO much for your email!  It is exactly what I need to hear!  I think I definitely need to detox the carbs out of my life, because try as I might over the past few days to simply decrease the carbs, as you said carbs be-get carbs so I fight all night with it.  My sweet boyfriend thought he was doing a good thing making roast for tonight, but included lots of potatoes in there and I gave in and then it was down hill.

I know I need to detox it will just be a matter of when and how.  Thanks for your advice, experience and suggestions I hope I can get a handle on this soon!

Thank you it helps to know that I am not alone in having slipped off track.  I am doing well with my exercise routine...going to the gym or doing pilates dvd  for at least 45 minutes everyday with 1 -2 days off.  I am hoping that will help my body get back into the groove of how things used to be.  Good Luck to you as well!
