creatinine levels

Just got my anual lab results back and they're all with in normal limits w/the exception of the creatinine level. Creat  was slightly elevated. This could indicate either to much protein intake to decrease in kidney function. Wondering if anyone else has had this and what, if anything you MD recommended.
Thanks for your input.

Every test since surgery has shown a slight irregularity in creatine and BUN. Just minor. Every now and then one slips back into range, but then the next tests show it back out.

My surgeons have seen this for more than 20 yrs. Maybe it needs addressing, but I've yet to see anything on this in any journals or anything like that.

Just always, "More water", as in water, not just liquid

Hey Michelle,
Thanks for responding. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond back. When you say you creat is slightly irregular how out of wack are they? Apparently, according to my pcp's nurse, the level have greatly increased from 2 years ago. So much so that I had to do a 24hr creatinine clearance urine collection. This showed a level of 60 which indicated stage 2 chronic kidney disease. My md put me on lisinopril 5mgs daily and will repeat a serum creat level in 6 days from 1at dose.

Granted, I don't drink like I should, especially at work. At work I find myself drinking more coffee (about a pot) than anything else until I see one of my co-workers drinking a diet green tea. I am trying to rectify this thou, it's really had though.

Please keep me informed if you read anything else on this. I've burned up the internet and continue to find the samy info. so anything you may have is greatly appreciated.

Just got mine and I'm .55 (.57 - 1.00)which is a hair low but the ratio is 65! EGAD! range here is 8-27 and I'm usually just outside that, 29 or something.

BUN is always a smidge high, a lil higher this time. 36 (5-26)

WE'll see if any docs catch it.

At least now I know why I'm losing wt. LOL thyroid is in hyperdrive. No wonder I can get up in the morning! LOL I'll fix it.

I'm still studying mine. Coupla new reads this time.

I have my creatine tested every three months because I have chronic kidney disease that I have had since 2001. I had GBS in 2006 and have had my creatine levels decrease to almost normal since that time. My kidney doctor feels things have improved due to my weight loss. I had asked him if I needed to limit the amount of protien I took in and he told me 80-100gms a day for me would be alright.

I know this does not answer your question. Did your doctor recommend anything to you? Will he follow up with lab work in a few months? As Vitaldy said drinking losts of water is important to flush things through.

Wishing you the all the best.

Hey Sher,
Thanks for replying. My doctor recommended and I completed a 24hr urine collection for creatinine clearance. This showed my level as 60 which indicated stage 2 chronic kidney disease. Dr. placed me on 5mgs of lisinopril and will repeat the serum creatinine level in 6 days from 1st dose. The thing that concerns me the most is that all previous cratinine levels have been normal.  I've never really tracked my protein intack. It maybe that it's to high. I also admit that I don't always drink as I should. I just hope and pray this will pass.

Sher,

Creatine and creatinine are two entirely different tests for different problems.  I do not remember why you run a creatine, but there is a reason.  I am a med tech but have not worked in over 23 years so I am a tad rusty on what does what.

My doctor says the levels appear due to the dehydration factor of fasting prior to the blood tests.  If the levels were only slightly out of the normal range, she wasn't concerned about them.

You will see a slightly high creatinine level because of the high protein diet. Mine is always a bit high, but nothing that concerns my surgeon. By-product of the WLS high protein diet. I drink about 90oz of water a day and mine is still a little high.

Hey Val,

Thanks for responding. I realize that due to the high protein diet the creatinine level may be slightly high but what do you or your pcp/surgeon consider to high.

I had to do a 24hr urine collection for creatinine clearance and it came back w/ a level of 60. this is considered stage 2 chronic kidney disease. This is very disconcerting and scary.

Admitedly I don't always drink as much as I should, especially at work. I'm trying to do better in that catagory. Do you strickly drink water or do you add crytal light, drink coffee or tea? Thanks again.
