Mystic Diet
A friend made the comment that I was starting to recommend that people follow the "mystic diet." I said it was more of a real food diet but I understood what they meant.
The principle of the Mystic Diet is that often times food is so complex that it is impossible to distill the one aspect that makes something a good food or a bad food. For example, it was discovered that eating Fish was healthy for you so researchers theorized it must be the Omega 3 Fatty Acids. The food industry then put Omega 3's in everything from Apple Strudel to Toaster Tarts but these foods didn't seem to have the same effect.
So, the researchers go back to the lab and discover Omega 6! Why the benefits of fish must be in the Omega 6 not just Omega 3. My claim is that there could even be something else about fish that makes it healthy. In other words, the totality of the food has some mystical property that can't be reduced to Omega anything.
One food that many WLS patients have success with is Greek Yogurt. I've often thought it was because it was easy to eat AND high in protein. Then I run across this article: "Taking a probiotics supplement after gastric bypass surgery helps patients lose weight faster and avoid vitamin B deficiency, a new study finds."
I found it interesting that Greek Yogurt contains billions of probiotic organisms and that WLS people seem to use it with great success. I always thought it was the protein. But, could it be probiotics? Or, even a mystical synergy of probiotics and protein? Perhaps if a study was done it might turn out that real food yogurt is better than the supplement.

Though I agree Greek Yogurt is high in protein and putting good bacteria is your stomach is key to a healthy digestive system I still believe the key component is weight loss is Omega 3 of which I take at least 4 grams daily.
I have been on a steady diet of at least 17 ounces of Greek Yogurt over 1.5 yrs. with berries and cherries, I see no change in weight. Ocassionally I succumb to carbs not very often but I do see a weight gain immediatelt however if I want to drop a few lbs I increase my Omega 3 from 4 grams day to 8 and it works for me every time. Fish also contains "DMAE" which is an antioxidant not talked about very much. I also take this 100mg of this supplement. Possibly this is the secret. It is also in some of my skincare for tighten and toning and contouring the skin.
I also get Omega 6 in my daily vitamin packet and extra cal/mag and Vit D, I often wonder is my adding 3500 of Vit D2 over the last 2 years has made a difference as well....another factor is I do not eat meat so can this be my answer???? I do take two 1000mcg of B12 injections per week and get plenty more B12 thru my daily vitamin pack & diet, another possibility...I don't know but would be very interested in a study like this. So many questions unanswered but I keep digging and making notes.

Current weight:120 and still 5'4
I'd really appreciate if you'd send me info on your vitamin pak, too. My levels are deficient and I'm supposed to be having my tummy tuck in 6 weeks, so I need to get back up there. But taking the various Bariatric Advantage pills all day long is so hard. I do it because I have to, but sometimes taking so many pills makes me not hungry, then I can't eat. Tried Celebrate Vitamins, but did not like them at all other than the B12 pills.
I started upping my Omega's about a month ago, then surgeon told me he didn't want me taking them for 4 weeks prior to my surgery date, so I quit until afterwards.
Thank you!

Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we're here we should dance. Unknown
I had great success with my weight loss and ease of maintenance so far. Just starting to research the benefits of adding Omega 3 or 6 (whats the difference?) to my supplementation. What are you taking, how much and where are you purchasing it.
Preop 242 Height 5'4" Current: 145 Want to get back to 135. ZERO Complications! ZERO Vomiting (Chew, chew, chew)! ZERO Regrets!
Omega 3 is the animal (fish) oil, Omega 6 is a plant oil. You need both and they work together to keep you healthy. Most folks get enough O-6 because we eat enough plant oils not so with the O-3. I take a basic fish oil supplement, mainly because I'm not a big fish eater.
Supplements have their place, especially after WLS, but to think that any would be a magic bullet for optimum health misses the point of the "mystic diet"
