Has anyone heard of anyone developing bulimia after weight loss surgery?  I mean...you are making your stomach "smaller" making it difficult to get food down.  Where else can it go but up...right?  Just wondering if anyone has had this experience.....

Happy Tuesday!  :-)

Hi Fab,

Well I don't know that I have officially heard someone say the "developed" bulimia post surgery, but I have certainly attended support group meetings and heard people who are 9+ months out that are still vomiting regularly, some even saying it is induced vomiting ( using a finger ) because they don't naturally throw up anymore, but have that heavy feeling that they need to - so they make it happen...I have also read on a couple of support chats about people doing this...To me that is within the defination of bulimia - SO, yes I think it , maybe not for the exact same reason ( truly post op how can you eat too much at one sitting ) but still because of the same underlying fear that motivates bulimicsm which is of course, weight gain...

I think the key is intent.

If you eat some dense protein, don't chew it well, and then throw up, well, that's an accident.

OTOH, if you intentionally eat in ways that make yourself thow up a lot...then that's an eating disorder.

I agree.  Great point.  I guess if you've have a couple of "accidents" you learn not to do it again.  It's the worst feeling.  But if you feel you have to do it...then it's a different story.
