6 Years Post Op...

Hello all! Been gone for quite a while but have a question. First off I have gained about 40 pounds which 20 of them were not such a bad thing. But the last 20 have made me start to worry. A lot of the gain is depression and hormonal. I started meds for them this week.

My question is in the last two weeks I have experienced some real trouble eating like in the beginning when maybe the bite was too big or you ate something that expanded in your stomach. I have not had any thing like this in years.

I have only thrown up 3 times in 6 years. Once with the flu and the last time after I ate some noodles. Felt it again last night as well. It's like it's stuck in my esophagus and is miserable pain for some time.

Any advice out there?

You should check with your WLS doc.  You might be developing a stricture.

Are strictures very common after being 6 yrs out?? Wow. I never knew that if they are..

Kathy, strictures can happen further out.  You wouldn't think it would happen after everything is healed but yep it does.  Not a common occurance like newbies though.

Hi,
I am 5 years out and gained about 20 pounds last year.  I vowed to eat better and get back on track this year and so far so good.  One thing I realized is that I had switched back to eating things that were easier for me to digest - softer foods like eggs, cottage cheese, breads, mashed potatoes.  After the first year after surgery, I did move to more dense foods but after about 3 1/2 years, started avoiding those.  I also let other bad sugars back into my diet (chocolate, cookies, cakes) - hence the weight gain.

I realized when I committed to eating better that the denser foods were a little uncomfortable (sometimes painful, but mainly uncomfortable) and I eat less.  I also try to chew chew chew those dense foods and not scarf them down like the softer foods.  Take a look at what types of foods you were eating during the period of weight gain and you might see a similar trend, or not .  This is just my experience and what I noticed.

Still trying to lose weight - exercising like a fiend and eating right, but only down 5 lbs this year (frustrating!)  But it's better than being up 5 lbs!  Some of my weight gain was also due in part to depression and hormones - those are a battle for life.

Good luck on your journey and stay positive.
