I was wondering how come some people can eat surgar like me and not have it bother you and some dump, do you think it has something to do with the way the surgery was done?

I wish I had an answer for you, as I have the same issue.  I was hoping that the surgery would cure me of the "sugar monkey" on back.  Rather, I dump on nothing but the rare few bites of ice cream, or too much grease.  I hope someone can explain this one.  I do think it is genetics/physiology and not the surgery itself.

Each of us is different. Like the food addiction thing. Each of us has our own trigger food. For me, it's sugar. I just can't stop once I start so I just better never start. I started out after surgery being sensitive to it and dumping...I just use that memory to keep myself in line.

For me, the thought of the trigger food being like alcohol, helps. Alcoholics can't have their trigger drug anymore...me either. It's a slippery slope.

I......don't.......know......why.....BUT I so wish I had the dumping feature.  Sugar calls my name way to much and unless I really, really overdo it there is no consequence.  Rarely do I have adverse affects to ANYTHING.

This is why I believe newbies should never, ever test the water; always assume you dump, not doing so makes this so much harder.

You probably get alot of flak for that statement about never testing the waters. I totally agree and I get garbage all the time about how OCD I am and it's not about dieting....blah blah...I have to be strict or I can't function...

I have found that if you cut off the sugar and white carbs for a long time, you will have adverse affects to it when you do eat it. I know I can eat sugar and can become de-sensitized if I build up a tolerance to it, so I stay as far away as I can and don't test the waters...then if I do screw up and have a piece of cake, it makes me ill and I feel better...if that makes sense. LOL.

If you think about it like an addiction, it might help.

So, correct me if I am wrong...what you are saying is if I STOP my addiction to sugar that overtime I WILL become sensitive to it and NOT be able to eat it?  This would be WONDERFUL! Chocolate is my downfall.....I don't know why I crave it so...it seems like I crave chocolate more now after the WlS than before I even had the WLS.

Totally disgusted with myself!  I feel like a failure for having gained back 15 lbs since my lowest Post WLS weight!

After WLS I used to dump and so it was easy to stay away from sugar. But over time, I found that I can tolerate some sugar and if I do, I can tolerate more and more, until it's just as bad as it ever used to be...So I stay away from it, and the effects of having some, just alittle...gross me out. The more I stay away from sugar, the more it grosses me out if I do have it. I'm not sure if it's mental or real but it works for me.

I've had a sip of my husband's cola and it's gross to me.

Sugar alcohols are nasty too but only in big quantities...I know if I eat too much of it, I have to go home very soon cuz I'll have that "laxative effect" before long. If I wanna stay at the store or the movie or wherever...I can't eat but a piece or two.

It's a mind game with me. For sure.
