Teeth
Good Morning!
I am three years post op and have had alot of problems with my teeth in the last year and was wondering if anyone else out there has had issues? My dentist and endodontist have both said that surgery can be related to the problems due to the body not absorbing vitamins/calcium as they used to. I just was curious if anyone else has had trouble and what you did about them.
Thanks!
we were launched on an aggressive program of calcium and the correct vit D (lots by today's WLS stds, but woefully inadequate by latest studies). those of us who kept up with everything aged, so I suspect shifting teeth is an age thing. i still have my originals, no breaking or crumbling. but I always took my vit D3 and calcium. Lots.
since most ppl are launched on the wrong or too little calcium and no one is launched on vit D3 (in the thousands of IU not hundreds), this will be one of the prices we pay.
Of course, i suspect that calcium/D deficiency was well under way pre-op, but very few test those things and treat aggressively then, and for life.
I take 8000 mg calc citrate, 50,000 dry vit D3 (not the rx)

P.S. My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
Am I reading this correctly that you take 50 thousand dry vit D3 and 8000 mg cal citrate??? That just seems so high. Can you tell me the brands you use please! I have to get started on these immediately--I have talked to my doctor/surgeon and they say levels are fine but I can tell you that my teeth are falling out and crumbling and I know that is a warning sign! Please let me know!
The 50k D3 is, um, well, my brand, Tender D3-50. The calcium is many. I am finishing off the Nature's Science cal/mag/D, but will switch to BioTech calc only later. I use BioTech's Osteo-Tech (microcrystalline hydroxyapatite) and Bariatric Advantage crystals (lactate gluconate). All 3 have similar absorption rates, and discourage kidney stone formation.
I also take separate magnesium oxide (for bowels) and magnesium citrate (pills-- for leg/foot cramping).
And strontium, another mineral that helps with calcium, tho not taken at the same time.
I've had years to work on this to try to save my bones, to learn which labs to get and what levels I want. You don't just walk in and get it right the first time! LOL
On your levels: define "fine". I guess I have pretty strong views on the difference between "fine" and optimal.

That said- I initially had quite a bit of trouble with my teeth- but I wasn't taking very good care of them to start with, and after some very costly procedures I've started brushing, flossing, etc as often as I should as well as taking my cal+D vots a diffrent time from the rest of my vits. (I found the though taking them all once a day was easy, they don't all play well together)
