Update on Need Help in No Cali

My doc sent me to the endocrinologist and she diagnosed me hypoglycemic and now with Hashimoto's disease.  She said that my labs show my thyroid is under attack from inflammation and that can be making fatigued.  Whew, sure seems like a lot is going on!

My PCP decided not to wait another week, he has ordered 5 IV iron infusions (1x per week) and then retest ferritin.

Endo said she can give me 10 days of ibuprofen for the inflammation to see if that makes my fatigue better.  I told her NO NSAIDs and then she came back with can WLS patients take prednisone?  Anyone have an answer for that?  Probably pretty improtant to know since I think the iron iv comes with  a shot of decadron (corticosteroid) and benadryl.

At least it seems like all my docs are working with me now.  My PCP said he doesn't think I am mental and thinks I need to get my iron up, work with Endo on blood sugar and Hashimoto's and get my vit D up.

Comments/advice are welcome and sought after   Thanks - dawn

I was at a meeting with Dr. Schlesinger last month.  He was asked about short term NSAID use.  He said it was OK as long as Prilosec, Nexium or something similar is taken to protect the stomach lining.

I'm glad your Docs are finally making some progress!  Feel better soon!

Regarding Hashimoto's, it is the most common cause of low thyroid and seems to be most prevelant in women in their late 30s to early 50s. Symptoms are fatigue, fuzzy thinking, depression, etc. For so many of us we think "that's just the way I am..." and try and push ourselves out of it.

I've been working with a holistic practitioner since earlier this year and its really helped. One suggestion is to read the book, "Thyroid Power" - it is a great resource for information about living with low thyroid.

One tip about Hashimoto's -- many people who have Hashimotos also have a gluten sensitivity. When this happens, eating gluten will inflame the immune system and make you feel more tired. Gluten is found in bread, wheat products, soy sauce, etc. You can't believe how many things contain gluten! It is thought that going off of gluten will have positive results (although sometimes it takes a few months to feel the difference). I've been off of gluten for about four months, I'm also taking other supplements & the thyroid medication from the doctor and I'm feeling SO much better.

Regarding the hypoglycemia - it is helpful to eat small amounts of protein every two hours -- even just a few almonds... it will help modulate your blood sugar.

Sending light and prayers for your well-being!!!
