4 yrs later and i am so depressed

I am 4 years post  op RNY and I am a ball of confusion. I am happy to be thin and feel better in many ways, but on the other hand I have many Issues that have occured since the surgery. Most directly relate to a second surgery I had after the RNY, but it all relates back to the RNY... Does that make sense? You see after the RNY I had a hernia that needed repaired and my gallbladder taken out. That surgery went all wrong with my gallbladder rupturing and me hospitalized 7 wks & requiring another surgery, in which the surgeon cut my bowel. Ever since then, i have pain when i drink any thin fluids on an empty stomach. I get terrible gas and gas pain when i ingest any carbs, esp simple, but complex as well. I can't tolerate fruit, it floats up, i just puke it out.  I am feeling so depressed about all these issues and there is nothing i can do about it. My husband can't stand the smelly gas, I can't give up carbs without occassionaly eating some. I feel sick when i eat them and sicker when i don't. It is such a hopeless feeling, The doctors can't do anything and i don't want cut open again. Basically, the only one who can stand me and my smelly gas  is my 7 yr old. God bless him, My B12 is low, i take injections monthly. My vitamn D is low and my bones are thinning. My estrogen seems low as well, I am just feeling down about it all. Thanks for listening to me whine. I know there are others who have life changing side effects from their surgeries and i can usually deal with them, but it wears on me and i just feel worn out emotionally. I am always tired and never feel rested. Anyone have any cheese to offer me with this whine? Thanks for listening.

I'm so sorry to hear what you've been going through.

Of course, you're allowed to whine.  It's not easy what's been happening to you.

I hope, someday, you can find a surgeon or physician who can give you some kind of relief

Of course you can whine...I'd whine like hell; *****; complain; scream and yell...It's absolutely nothing you have done to yourself so it's really nothing you can do anything about EXCEPT whine...

Maybe look for another doctor but that's just vengeful reasoning there..

Keep after the vitamin regime. I heard that sort of re-adjusts after time.

Forget the whine, throw a hissy fit.  I know I would.  Sorry you are going through so much.  I hope you can get your vitamin levels up that might help with the depression some, are you taking anything to combat the depression.

Here's a ((((HUG))) and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Thank you to each of you *****sponded. Prayer helps, so I appreciate it. I tried to sue the physician, as she did not tell me or my family my gallbladder had ruptured during surgery. She came out and said everything was fine. She also did not tell me she had nicked my bowel with the next surgery! My RNY dr was the one who told me this, based on her surgery records. You would think I could sue, but I contaced several Lawyers who specialize in medical malpractice and none would take the case. Said there was no case as there was no residual side effects from the errors. Really, then  why all this pain?

My only choice was to report her to the medical board for not being upfront and honest about what happened during surgery.

What a screw! That Doctor should pay for your pain and suffering ...IF nothing else all the mental agony!  Here is what I am wondering... They can remove a portion of the bowels, so why can they not do that to you... the portion where teh nick was and most likely scar tissue?

My RNY doc told me that the plastic surgeon nicked my bowels... I had big time pain for 6 months after that surgery (same thing... COULD NOT EAT WITHOUT PAIN--in retro spec, should have kept it that way, I ate less...LOL J/K... Finally I had to go in with an emergency bowel obstruction.  Not sure how that all worked but I know that I suddenly felt a million times better. I know they did not take out any bowels with that surgery... just rearranged stuff in there... stuff I might add that was showing up as being okay on teh cat scan.

So my original thought... IF it is a consequence of being nicked... and there is damage to teh bowel... I know for a fact they remove portions and reconnect, why is this not an option for you?

Are you a 100% sure your bowels are not obstructed.

Here is a side note to my bowel surgery... I had teh SAME surgery DONE 3 fricken times! Each time they all claimed to sew up my petersons space... and 3 times they swore it broke open... HUH! It was not until MY DOC ( not one of his crazy colleagues) said that the CAT scan was still neg but that he wanted to "See" what was going on did HE finally close it up... apparently with teh last obstruction ( almost a yr ago) my bowels were mangled... WOW... could have lost those pups!

Good luck.... this is not over.... get a new surgeon.... go back to your RNY doc if need be. If you trust him.

Melinda,

I'm sorry to hear you've had such a rough time since your RNY.  I hope you find some relief soon.

Please keep up with your vitamins and supplements.  Have you had your iron checked recently?  I know how horrible and worn out I feel whenever my iron is tanking.  I also take B-12 shots monthly and while that helps with the energy level some, the big difference for me came when I got my iron levels up.

Take care and let us know how you're doing.
