5 day pouch test
Well... I am a mushy food-a-holic.... I am so guilty of making a stew/soup into everything... I guess I never realized it... I think I do it becuase I was a volume and not calories... so I tend to pile in the veggies and lean meats... I seldom ( but I LOVE) add pasta. If I do it is minimal. TRUST me though, I get me carbs... Ohhhhhh do I get them..... I have picked up a horrible habit in the last 2 yrs....NIBBLing!!!! Everytime I go in teh kitchen, I need a nibble of something... anything.... and 9x's out of 10 it is not a carrot... it is a cracker, few pretzels, teddy grahams etc... carbs carb carbs!!!! I do well with meals, just not snacks. I also have a habit of my night time "sweet" snack. It is sugar free something or anther but lets face it... it is the calories... Sugar free has just as many. So I can see those bad habits....Snackys, nibbles and mushy foods... Hummmmmmm. Maybe this 5 day pouch thing is good for me.
Can you plz elaborate on the carbs leading to water weight comment.... I ask because I have noticed that my ankles are turning back into CANKLES.... I have a lot of swelling that is unexplained. I limit my salt ( So i believe).... I have even resorted to taking a few water pills this week.... I wonder if my carb nibbling has anything to do with it....

I'm with ya sweetie! I have a nighttime snacking problem...I've got it under control by choosing my snacks fairly wisely and planning for them for the most part... But all the snacky foods you mentioned sounds like you have small kids in the house! I don't, so I do not go near the crackers, pretzels, cookies..(THE walk of shame CARB AISLE!) LOL Nope, I avoid that aisle right along with the bakery section...I am just not that strong! If I do buy that stuff for my family (which they complain if I don't now and then) I get the stuff that they like an that I don't! That's safe for me!
As far as slider foods...I made split pea soup with ham last night! It's quite filling for me...I add large chunks of ham and (firm, but cooked carrots) to give me something to chew and fill up so I don't just keep eating. I eat a LOT of stew type soups or very thick meat and bean soups. I don't have a problem with sliders because I eat every 3-5 hours anyway and they are usually complex carbs and protein based...Later, I actually welcome a little hunger and hold on as long as I can to it without waiting til I want to scarf a bag of whatever ready made food I might have! LOL If I eat sliders, I will plan a small snack before my next meal like a serving of nuts which totally fill me up...16 almonds and I am good to go for 3 hours! Or a banana... It's a commitment to NOT bring home foods I can't say no to...Pretzels were my favorite Pre op snack food...I cannot buy them or I will eat them gone! If I buy any kinds of snacks I get individual bags for family or I find the smallest bag rather than the largest I can find...I don't care if it's cheaper to buy big..."Big" ends up on my hips! It's one thing to do without those old foods the first year...It's a WHOLE other thing trying to maintain your weight loss year after year! Tiresome!
I get my carbs too, but I am so choosy about carbs. I am pretty good about not eating simple carbs( I have my moments and I go work out when I have those!) ....But do eat some complex ones for sure! I refuse to cut them from my diet. I tried that and it's not a realistic goal for me to do super low carbs long term. I don't have cravings from complex carbs... So, I'd rather save up for a 1/4 c of rice with dinner than eat a handful of cookies! (most of the time) LOL I guess these are things that you have to work hard on over the years til it became habit/ commitment to a lifestyle change...It's hard and I argue with myself almost daily about my food choices...even still!
And last.... the comment about complex carbs being water is that when doing any low carb diet, including the 5DPT, you usually lose 5-8 lbs of water first...As soon as you add back carbs, you usually gain back the water weight because Carbs bind with the body's water and so fewer carbs the less water weight...So when people start low carb diets they lose (water) super fast but it's not permanent and as soon as they return to eating carbs...the water comes back....Low carb diets can lead to nutritional defs as well because all your fruits and veggies and grains (your complex carbs) have all kinds of vitamins that are missing from the low carb diet...and that can send your metabolism into chaos and starvation mode and it's just not worth the trouble for 5-8 lbs of water! Plus your brain and muscles need some sugars (glucose) to function....To lose weight, YES cut out simple carbs and sugar...BUT NOT complex carbs...Those carbs keep you fuller longer even as sliders! The 5DPT forces you to go cold turkey on the simple carbs! You do eat very low complex carbs too...but only a few days! And what a relief to someone who is hooked on them! It is night and day! It was for me...I did lose 4 lbs and gained 2 back but went straight into dieting by cutting calories and keeping a food log to watch my intakes after the 5 days...That helped me soooooo much! I was on a really slippery slope with sugar and breads...The 5 DPT got rid of my cravings...and it was structured and easy to follow for the most part...5 days was nothing! I learned so much those 5 days about how the truth about sugar and simple carbs...They really do create a monster...

Wow, thanks for that explanation that was so generous of you. Taking the time to help us all out. I have tried the five day pouch test a few times and could not make it through one whole day and ended up eating everything. But since your explanation of how it helped you so much and mainly teaching about yourself and carbs, calories, etc. I think I may try it again sometime, I just have to be sure that I can give it my all. Thanks again Susan T.
