Don't cry Anita, but set your  mind to making a few changes, if that doesn't help you may need to be medication to lower that cholesterol, sometimes diet alone won't bring those numbers down. I am on Lipitor for that very reason.

As for a diet low in fat, stay away form saturated fats, use small amounts of olive oil, low fat mayonaise in your diet and something like smart balance margarine instead of butter. Chose meats low in fat, eat more chicken, (no skin) and fish. Try eating a serving of plain oatmeal each day, that is suppose to help lower cholesterol a little. Make sure you get some exercise in that will help raise your good cholesterol levels.

Also, ask you doctor for a some specific guidlelines if you are unsure of what to do.

Anita, I think you will find it very interesting to know that diet does very little to control cholesterol. Some people are genetically predispositioned to have high cholesterol. They can be the skinniest ,healthiest looking individuals and have cholesterol ranges in the 800's. My thought is your physician is planning to retest your cholesterol in 6-12 months to see if dietary changes helped. If not then she/he will probably recommend a cholesterol lowering medication. Foods high in cholesterol include
  • Whole-milk dairy products
  • Butter
  • Cream
  • Ice cream
  • Cream cheese
  • Certain shellfish, such as shrimp
  • Other organ meats, such as kidney and brain
  • Duck and goose (which have more cholesterol than chicken or turkey; the skin on these animals is high in cholesterol). shrimp, organ meats, beef, veal, and many processed foods. More important than overall cholesterol is ldl to hdl ratios. Attached is a site that gives the top 5 cholesterol lowering foods. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cholesterol/CL00002
  •
  • Remember cholesterol comes from animal products fruits and vegetables do not have cholesterol.
  •
  • Good luck to you
