protein shakes??
I never started the gym because I know how I am. I'm good for a year, maybe two but I'll start slacking and then paying for something I'm not doing...Too much work. LOL. So I get up several times during my work day and hand deliver mail instead of wait for the regular delivery. I also got a wii for at home and it's actually fun.
The biggest thing I can recommend is keep really close track of what you are eating by journaling it. It's really surprising when you start measuring and writing it down where all those calories add up.
A Double Whopper with Cheese is over 1000 calories and I used to eat a large fries and a shake with that several times a week...I never knew.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

You can use FitDay, or a pad of paper and food labels. Always remember that Protein and Carbs are 4 calories per gram. Fat is 9 calories per gram. This means, for 1000 calories per day, 500 of those calories should be protein. Taking 500 / 4 you get 125 grams of protein per day. The remaining 500 calories can be split between the carbs and fat.
Excercise is the easiest! Put on some shoes and walk at least 40 mins per day
As for WHAT protein, the lean protiens would be best: Fish, chicken, strained yogurt, etc.
For breakfast I like eggs with some cheese. You could also have strained yogurt. One thing I often do is have more complex carbs in the morning (aka plain oatmeal) and then less for lunch (lean meat and salad?). Adding a scoop of vanilla protein to something like plain oatmeal also helps add protein to something that does not have very much.

I gained 10 lbs last year and did add a protein shake...I used it to replace carbs. I was eating a carby breakfast of mostly complex carbs (hot grain cereals and steel cut oats and such), and full sugar fru fru in my coffee! I felt like I was eating all day or at least hungry all day! I still eat grain cereals but not every day...weekends mostly....
So I replaced the coffee fru fru with protein powder and after I drink that, I am not hungry til lunch ...so I was able to cut the calories and sugar from the coffee creamer and drop the cereal breakfast as well...It made a huge difference in my lifestyle... I went on to lose all ten pounds, rather slowly ( I was sick with anemia and very tired and had to stay inactive) but eventually got back to moving again (without a routine exercise) I am NOT a gym person at all...But I can move my body! Once I was well again, I was able to eat again without having to watch every single gram of this or that...So I firmly and totally believe you MUST move your body...even if you don't go to the gym or make perfect food choices 100% of the time...I'm just not that perfect and yet I am doing perfectly fine! If I can get the late snacking in control, I'll feel better!
