Orthostatic Hypotension

My doctor says I have it. And there is nothing to be done. I did some research and found out the is a link between WLS and OH.

Does anyone else have this?

The symptoms are dizzy or loss of consciousness when standing from sitting or lying down. Rapid heartbeat and breathing. The spontaneous revival. Sounds harsh, huh? It is.

I have read of others on this site which have the problem;  usually they just take their time when moving from sitting to standing, or from laying to sitting to standing, and that seems to help.  You just can't leap up to your feet until your body gets the blood moving from the resting position to the "upright and locked" position.

It isn't fatal unless you fall into a table and cut your head open or fall down the stairs or something.

Take it easy!

I am glad to know it's not fatal. Thanks for the info!!

Hi!  I feel your pain!!  I was in and out of hospitals Sept 2007- May 2008 due to OH  ~they wanted to diagnosis me with POTS.  It has gotten ALOT better!!!  When Hospitalized my BP was 76/52.  Now it stays pretty close to 80'-90's/ 60ish.  Drink TONS of water and eat salt is what I was told.  One point it was sop bad I was on a steriod to keep BP up and I asked to be off because I gained 8lbs in 1 week!!
Hang in there....I think my body has finally adjusted but I can can dizzy spells here and there ~haven't went unconcious since 2007.
HUGS

OMG! I am so glad you are better now. How scary. Do you think it was WLS related?

WLS related: NO!  WEIGT LOSS related: probably.  I lost 130 in 9 months which dropped my "volume" which lowered my BP.  With all that I WILL NOT blame WLS for it.  It's just a part of losing so much so fast when low BP was to start with (my norm before surgery was 100's/80's).  It was scary going thru all the tests and not finding a concrete answer to WHY.....but hey, it worked itself out and no biggie!!  I am happier and healthier now then I have ever been  and I can't complain!!

I must also say to make sure that you are taking ALL your vits and calcium!!!  If not it could get worse.

Thanks a lot! I am taking my vitamins everyday. I know they are an important part to being healthy.

I am starting to think it's not WLS related either, I wanted to know what others thought or have went through.

I think you are right, It's due to the drop in volume, or mass. i lost the bulk of my weight quickly also. I hope it gets better for me. I am glad it got better for you.

I have been through some of the same stuff and your numbers when hospitalized is about what I had but mine have went lower.  Hydrate, salt that is what I do. The cardiologist said I  have POTS but I don't believe him. They don't know what causes the pressure problem.  I pray that someday I will wake up and it will be gone.  Glad you are better.

Hugs

Thanks! I notice it most when I stand from sitting or lying down. I haven't been in a real hot pool or shower yet to notice any difference, but I will watch for that. Thanks!!
