Need Eating Plan

I'm almost 2 years out.  Really having a problem with very low blood sugars over recent months.  Blood glucose can drop down to 28.  Started when I had dental work done which caused problems with chewing and protein consumption.  Started taking in too many carbs due to problems chewing.  Now I'm totally out of balance and have gained 16 lbs.  My blood sugar drops so low that it takes coke to bring me up.  A simple snack of carb and protein won't do it.  I need a very scheduled eating plan.  Does anyone have a 1500 calorie, high protein low carb plan I can follow to get myself back on track.  I'm a mess.  I cannot tolerate gaining weight. and being so out of balance.  Thanks for any help!

Hi there, what you are experiencing is reactive hypoglycemia. I have this too and have to have small frequent meals low in simple carbs.I try my best to follow this, but often fail. I just try to stay away from simple carbs, i e sugary cereal, candy, white pasta, rice, white breads, crackers etc. I am lucky that i can feel when i am dropping and the lowest i have documented is 46. Then i grab a slice of whole grain toast w/pnut butter and raisins. This gets me up fairly quick and keeps me up. The worst thing you can do is go for the coke. It is quick relief, but again allows you to drop. key into the signs you get when your bld sugar drops. I get shakey, nauseaus, hot and sweaty. I feel anxious.

Anyway, I eat before i leave for work
B- protein drink, or egg with sprout bread
S today was apple w/ pnut butter powder
L- Lean cuisine
S- low carb yogurt/high protein
D- meat and vegie w/ a small serving of carb.
S cheese, vegies,
You can adjust the calories to you. I am only 5'2" and have had a 20Lb weight gain, so i want to stay between 1200-1400

Best of luck, it feels awful to have low bld sugar. I tended to grab the closest simplest carb for instant relief, but it would later ( 2 hrs) bite me in the butt.
Peace and Blessings, Melinda

Melinda,
.......................Thanks so much for the plan.  This will be very helpful.  I was able to talk with my dietitian.  She said combining a protein with my carb as the first response to low blood sugar was not the way to go.  Says the protein actually slows the absorption of the simple carb needed to raise my sugar.  The plan now is to go with 6 ounces of 100% juice or 8 ounces of milk, then follow 15 minutes later with a snack of carb + protein.  Thanks again.  tgarr

for easy to chew stuff:

b: oatmeal with protein added in the morning (a breakfast is a MUST!)

s: 1 oz cheese stick with a pc of turkey ham wrapped around it

s: 1/2 cup cottage cheese w/sf jelly or salsa and cheese...(depending on if you have a sweet tooth or not)

s: sf pudding with textured vegetable protein (TVP) on top. The tvp is crunchy but not too bad.

And fruit that can me soft is papaya, cantalope....stuff like that.

You can take a look at the daily accountability and see if someone is at or around 1500. I am most days. I have at least three snacks during the day...all are actually smallish meals which keeps my blood sugar constant.
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Atkins has developed a bad reputation from people who don't fully understand it...but it might really help you.  check out Atkins.com and read through the courses and decide if it's something that would work for you.

Basically you spend 2 weeks in "induction" Which consists of as much protein as you want (fat at this stage is not limited, and calories should be around 1,500 to 2,000 although you don't have to count them unless you stall on weight loss..and that is often from not eating enough calories cause your hunger is so in control..most people have a hard time eating all the calories they need to lose weight) and TONS of veggies.. you stay at 20 net carbs (meaning the carb count after fiber is subtracted) 12 to 15 of these net carbs MUST come from veggie's...which is a LOT of veggies.. it would be like 14 cups of lettuce just to get the carbs in from veggies, people often choose higher carb veggies, like a cup of brocoli, and a cup of cauliflower and a big salad for lunches and snacks, then peppers, onions, and olives in an omelet for breakfast..etc..

I've been doing this for a couple weeks now and have lost 10 lbs..have never felt better, am not hungry...

Atkins has a stereotype of being about eggs bacon and cheese..meat and fat..e.tc.. but it's more about veggitables then anything else...but you still get PLENTY of protein in... as you move through the phases you gradualy add carbs back in 5 grams at a time...starting with MORE veggies, then adding in nuts and baries and finally complex grains.

Take a look at the pre-maintenance and the maintence section of the online courses...it is truly a GREAT post surgery way to live.

I think I have found what will finally work for me... maybe it could work for you as well?

You need to address this with your WLS doc.  You may have nesidioblastosis, where the beta cells of the pancreas go nuts and make way too much insulin.   I have it and even after having 60% of my pancreas removed, still have problems keeping my sugar up.  I have found that if I eliminate ALL processed carbs, all starchy carbs, and simple sugars, I have an easier time keeping my sugars level.

As another posted said, Coke is the worst thing you can do when you drop.  You need protein along with any carb.  My endocrinologist says milk is the best.  Hard to carry milk with you but try to find a protein bar that has some carb in it.  As far as regular eating, protein and veggies.  I will drop on fruit if I don't combine it with protein.  So an apple with peanut butter or cheese would work.

One of the problems with nesidioblastosis is that what you eat today and drop on, you probably won't tomorrow.  I will drop on Slim Fast low carb shakes.  Go figure.  But not every day.  Only some days.  It's really hard to figure out how to eat.

I hope that you are checking your blood sugar before driving.  I know there are a few people on this board and others that have actually had seizures from their blood sugar being low and have wrecked their cars.

Check out the latest issue of CLEAN EATING.

They have a 2 week meal plan at around 1700 calories, 3 meals, 2 snacks.  Most days were over 80g protein.
