Protein drink info

I'm looking for some info about protein drinks.  Do most of you who are 2+ years out still drink protein shakes on a regular basis?  If so, what kind do you prefer?  And what kind of protein powder do you like the most, and where do you buy it?

It's been a while since I've done protein shakes, and I think having a shake would help with my snacking tendancies.  So I'm looking for something that's sweet and yummy, and easy to make.

Suggestions?

FYI:  I normally get at least 70-80 grams of protein per day, so it's not that I'm deficient on protein.  I just snack way too much, and need something I can have that is GOOD for me to fill in the gaps between meals.

Thanks!

Hi Tiffany:

I will be 3 years out next month.  I still drink protein drinks and eat protein bars to supplement my regular diet.  I buy the unjury chocolate and unflavored powder from their website.  I mix the chocolate with water and ice.  It taste like a yoohoo chocolate drink to me.  I love the pure protein bars, chocolate deluxe, that you get from walmart.  The shake offers 100 calories with 20 grams of protein and the bar offers 180 calories with 20 grams of protein.  I always start my day with a shake and have 1 protein bar as a snack during the day.  I also use the unflavored powder to mix with my s.f. jello pudding mix and make a protein pudding.  It has about 130 calories and 14.5 grams of protein in it.  By doing this with my regular diet, my protein intake is around 100-120 grams a day.  Calories are around 1100 to 1400 a day.  I have maintained my weight within a 5 lb. limit by doing this.  I hope this helps you out.

I personally can't handle whey protein and while I didn't really need a protein supp either, I did want to cut out my regular carby breakfast  even though it was complex carbs usually, and full sugar coffee fru fru every morning....So rather than drink 200 calories of vanilla coffee creamer!  I started using protein powder as my creamer and it filled me so much I cut out a 200 calorie breakfast as well!  So that worked out GREAT for me!

I hate the smell of whey and most everything about it...But I decided to try the brand they were selling at Costco and I was pleasantly surprized that it was not really thick and smelly like regular whey powders...Plus it was not sickening artificial sweet....I don't love any protein drinks...but this one I definately LIKE and I start every day with it in my coffee. (It doesn't mix well without a super powered hand mixer in hot liquids) so if you are using hot liquids for your protein, mix well first in tepid liquid and then add to hot or use a good mixer...A whisk will not do it!  So being lactose intolerant I can handle EAS Whey Soy Protein Isolate blend from Costco...It only comes in chocolate and vanilla...I buy the vanilla  and add other flavors all the time....I add sugar free coco for chocolate, orange extract for a dreamsicle flavor, cinnamon , nutmeg and ginger for a chai coffee or tea...SF syrups for many other flavors....and I make awesome cold fruit smoothies with it too in the summer...My family loves the smoothies...I make their with ice cream as well...Mine gets some frozen whipped cream!  (cool whip is low sugar and I use a little to make it creamy)

You can do these with most protein powders...But for lactose intolerance this has been the only one I can handle so far....I love Muscle Milk too...and even though it is whey isolate, I cannot drink but a half serving  without dumping....I can't handle sugar alcohols and some other artifical sweeteners...This sugar things is all just recently!  It drives me crazy and limits what sweet things I can eat....I think proteins supps have WILDLY different tastes preferences from different people...so you really just have to try samples anytime you can to see which ones you like and can handle.  They are just too expensive to try just cause they sound yummy!  Some of them have awesome names and flavors and I open the container and faint from the gross smell of them!  LOL YUCKY!   Proteins are VERY personal!  Similar to perfume tastes...One person's fav perfume is anothers rest stop bathroom deodorizer complete with full stink!.....Same idea with protein!  LOL

Tiffany,

I also still drink a minimum of 1 protein drink a day, sometimes more.  I generally have Chocolate Champion Pure Whey Stack (I buy from Vitalady) in the AM.  I like to mix it in the blender with ice, water, banana and some instant coffee.  Tastes like the Starbucks Vivano.

I also like Click and will have that in the afternoon.  Can you tell I like coffee????

Since you haven't been drinking them for a while, I suggest you order samples to find what you like, before investing a lot of money.  Again, Vitalady is a good source.

I still use the Atkins shakes.  I wouldn't say I LOVE them.....(I would much rather have a real shake but we know that won't do me well) but they are tolerable.

They increase my protein intake and keep me from reaching for the carbs......  I also have low blood sugar issues that don't occur when I eat like I am SUPPOSED to eat and the shakes help with that.

I have been having a pure protein bar at night when the sweet attack hits me....evenings have always been a bad time for me.  This helps.

Good Luck!

Cindy

I'm 14 yrs, from a distal rny. very distal. I need 120g in protein supps to maintain good levels, BUT I prefer 180g or more. So, that's 6 drinks of 30g each, made with water.

I'll list them, but #1 has been d/c by the mfr. Well, they still make the name, but the contents are not the same at all. So, I'm savoring my last few jugs and then my life is over. Been using it since 1996!

Any of these are what I use:

1.) Champion ProScore 100 choco + 8 oz water + ice, blended (hand blender or Magic Bullet).
2.) Champion Pure Whey Stack choco + 6-8 oz water, shaken.
3.) IDS vanilla-cinnamon + "glop" of DaVinci sugar free caramel sauce + 8 oz water + ice, blended.
4.) the PWS chco + the van-cin (50/50) in about 10 oz ho****er, stirred or hand blender.

They deliver 30g protein, less than 3g sugar, less than 200 calories, when made with water.

Lately I've been adding a shake of cinnamon to my hot ones since cinnamon fights belly fat.

I tried BSN dessert shakes and theyre really good!  Whipped vanilla creme and Cinnamon roll were my favorite.  Someone here suggested adding cinnamon roll to oatmeal.. I can't tell you how good it is!  great way to get extra protein in :)

check out www.nashuanutrition.com they sell samples :)
