Norovirus lesson learned
Hello. I am 2 yrs. and 2 months out and this is the very first time I have posted in any forum on this site, however, my experience was too important not to share. I had the unfortunate joy of picking up the Norovirus (the "cruise ship virus") last week. My goodness what a challenge. It struck quickly at 8:00 at night, with every aspect of gastroenteritis in full swing from the get-go. Trips to the bathroom at 15 minute intervals for 12 hours straight. At one point, I quit going to bed and just stayed seated in the bathroom with a bucket.
Long story short, there were moments where I wasn't sure it was a virus, and I thought maybe I had a twisted bowel, or due to all of the wretching, surely must have twisted one. I kept putting off the inevitable trip to the ER thinking it would "pass", but in consideration of the consequences of not treating that condition, finally gave in. Thanks to my wonderful husband, a couple of bags of saliene, pepcid and compazine, they finally stopped the nausea, and the madness, and thankfully, no obstructed bowel. Oh my.
I just wanted to share that I got a very strong reminder that my system is not like others, that I have to remain extra vigilant, and that "toughing it out" in situations like that is just plain dumb...at least for me. It has been five days, and I am still eating "old lady food" (yogurt with grape nuts, plain chicken, jello etc.) to help with my transition back to the real food world. Of course my wonderful husband and then my daughter went down with it right after me, but their experience and recovery were a walk in the park compared to me.
Lesson learned...we have a wonderful tool that allows us to enjoy so much more of our lives, but we get to respect and take care of it for the rest of our lives.

I'm so happy you got medical treatment.
Many of us think we deserve to be in pain because we have chosen to have WLS.
We don't deserve that and most of all we deserve to be painfree and seek medical attention without judgement of others. We know our bodies better than anyone else. Thank God you listened to your husband.
May you continue on the path of wellness and just rest that pouch for a few days. You'll be ship shape in no time! Sending you hugs.

Great reminder!
I had a virus last year that effected my throat, I couldn't swallow without great pain. I went to the Doc one day, they gave me steriods but the next day I was in the ER extremely dehydrated. So yes, we can get much sicker much faster than normal!
I'm glad you're recovering well.

You know Debbiejean, I don't think its because I wanted to be in pain, I was just plain scared. For starters, folks have a really difficult time getting an IV in to me (lots of digging and poking) and second, the thought of another possible surgery just plain scared the daylights out of me. The pain got so darn bad though, that I figured if it really was an obstructed or bowel torsion, being scared sure wasn't worth dying over. Funny thing is, I had to come to that conclusion. My husband helped me along, but I'm so pigheaded, it had to be my idea. Thank you for your kind thought and words.
Oh my! Having just gotten over the stomach flu myself (gastroenteritis) I can feel your pain completely! I certainly hope you didn't get sick on a cruise because I'm scheduled for a cruise in March..If I get this stuff on a cruise, I will be one pissed off puppy!
Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

Long Beach to Catalina to Ensenada? During Spring Break? I thought I'd be the only one dense enough to go to Ensenada (Teen Town) during Spring break! LOL>
That would be awesome!

I had something similar happen to me at about 7 months out of the surgery.. I think it was fear that kept me from going to the ER or DR...thankfully when I finally did. it was exactly a virus and nothing broken or malfunctioniong..It if very true.. we have to take care of ourselves we are not the same and it is important to remind that to those we have taking care of us..
