Vitamin D problems or is it just me???

Well I got my yearly blood work done this past week, 5.5 years out... all is well, aside of the 25 lb weight gain I did in the past year and a half by being lazy and grazing... etc... EXCEPT for the second blood test in a row now I have WAY LOW Vitamin D levels... like holy crap low.

The part of that I find disturbing is I am supplementing with 1200 MG a day, and I am still that  at a 12 when the normal parameters are between 30 and 150...

Now I know I moved from Chicago to Washington state, but geeeesh!!!! Its not northern Alaska there is some sunlight here... And I travel all the time for work so its not like I never see natural light.

SO my question is... does anyone else seem to be having these issues?  If so how are you beating them...

Meanwhile I am going to up the supplements... AGAIN... and test again in 6 months rather then waiting a whole year.  And evidently go in for a bone density scan... (at 36 years old) to make sure I am not hurting my bones with this issue.

What type of D are you supplementing with?  It needs to be Dry D3 to work.  When I was low, I used 50,000 IU three times a week and got my level up over 100 in 6 months.  You can get Dry D3 in several different doses from Vitalady.

100% of us had or have low vit D, even pre-op. Vit D was stored in the fatty tissue, which is not useful to us. It's like storing your food in the insulation of your house--between the walls!

Since we malabsorb fats/oils to varying degrees, you can count on it being low. It always was. But nobody was testing AND the standards for what is good have changes just since 2007. We WANT to be up near 100 on the D 25,hydroxy test. Moving to WA had nothing to do with it. I have ppl in HI, AZ, FL, who DO go in the sun, unscreened and are still low. Sun is more myth than reality.

The D you put into your face has to be dry, not oil, and must be vit D3. That's the only form the body "sees". So if you buy or take D2 (or even D1), such as the Rx vit D (D2), it's in oil for one, so it's gone, but ALSO, it has to convert to D3 to be "seen". Our converters are bypassed with RNY or BPD (with or without DS).

AND vit D deficiency is PANDEMIC, as in not just an American problem, but a world wide problem.

So, are you alone? No. I think *I* am alone in having gotten and sustained levels over 100 for 18 months now. But since I read stuff on vit D daily, it'd be kinda embarrassing if I couldn't make it behave.

Since you are so low, hopefully they'd test in 3 months. My docs test because I'm running on the high end. It's not an expensive test. You can even get the test to do at home for $65, if you think your insurance will balk.

I wish they did a bone density (whole body, not a finger or ankle) pre-op, because 60% of us who have been scanned ALREADY have bone loss! All the diets, massive wt losses of a life time, the vit D stored in the fatty tissue, using all the wrong things for calcium intake--we never stood a chance. Bone density are usually done annually, within a few days of each other, and if possible, by the same tech, on the same machine so the comparison is accurate.

You sound very knowledgeable.  What do you take for calcium and does it already include the D3 or do you take an additional D3 supplement?  I'm trying to get my daily calcium on a good schedule with the right product(s).  Thanks for any info!

For calcium, I use:
capsules with mag/D (citrate)
BA calcium crystals (plain, in my protein)(lactate gluconate is the form)
OsteoTech, microcrystalline hydroxyappatite
sometimes the BA cinnamon calc citrate lozenges

I take 6000-8000 mg calcium in varied forms now. None of these contribute to kidney stones, but all have stone FIGHTING properties, before you ask.

I take about one of the 50,000 D3 per day. Sometimes less, like 3 per week. My D levels are excellent (top of range), so my docs get nervous when it flows over the top. I bring it back down a few pegs and everyone is happy.

There is no way there is enough D3 in any calcium out there. Our proximal RNY go out the door on 10,000 D3, not counting any in multi, calciums or any other source.
