hiatal hernia anyone? would like to compare notes...
Hi! I'm 17 months out and have a hiatal hernia. Dont know how I got it but I've been in a lot of pain. Doc discovered it during gallbladder removal in Oct but didnt fix it due to lask of consent ( and I think he was in ahurry
). Obviou;lsy want please with that reason but nothing I can do now...
All in all I do trust him and he has an excellent record.
I am experiencing pain in my chest. It usually starts around my xyphoid bone and spreads up into chest. I get a little heartburn or reflux feeling but not too m uch of that. It is more PAIN...I start to get a throbbing feeling and a lot of pressure. I also get burpy and I NEVEr could burp before. I have a lot of gas too but I think that is related to lack of gallbladder now - that is when that started. Pain almost ALWAYS begins about 2-3 hours after eating and it subsides when I eat. Now I have to eat more often - my meals are relatively small (about a cup of food) but I'm not hungry and if I dont eat the pain intensifies. (I rarely feel hunger still after 17 months - only if I go for 4-6 hours without eating). My doc said the hernia is about 1.5 -2 inches long. He thinks the pain that I am having is my pouch actually slipping INTO the hernia (the throbbing pain). My "theory" is that when it is empty it is easier for this to happen, when I eat, the weight of the food draws it out and holds it in place unti it is empty again. My physical position affects it too. It can wake me up in the middle of the night if I "lay" the "wrong way"...guess waht - no consistency in the "wrong way". If I sit in my bed propped against pillows toolow, pain starts. If I get up, move around, reposition, it slacks off. I I wear my size 8 jeans that FIT - by the end of the day I hurt. I I wear the 10s that almost fall off, I am fine.
So what gives? anyone else out that experience ANY of this???? would love to be able to share & compare notes or am I a freak and all alone in this?????

I have nearly the same symptoms as you. I have not been diagonsed with anythings as of yet. I am going for my 3 year check up this month and I want some answers. I am so tired of hurting. I did not think about it, but yes, when my pouch is empty...it hurts more. And when I eat a few crackers or something it feels better a little. I have just gotten into the habbit of eating smaller quanties more often. I can drink hot tea sometimes to calm it down, but then again sometimes it feels like it is burning worse. Sometimes if I set in the wrong position for a while, it hurts and when I work out or exercise it will flare up too. It never seems to have any consistency in when or why it hurts. I always feel like I am complaining when I ask the doctor about it. I keep thinking.... What if it is just gas pain???? How would that make me look???? How embarrassing!!!
What did your doctor tell you to do about the hernia? Do you have to have surgery?
Let me know......

Not sure of your experience but I hope you get "the pain" fixed!!! I had a hiatal hernia when I was only 17 yrs old. I remember when I noticed it was after Thanksgiving there was this pain and when I put my finger on it I could pu**** back in. Didn't bug me all the time until Jan and I went into the doctor and by that time my muscles were tightening around the piece of intestine and you could no longer pu**** back in so this doctor told me that it was either a tumor or a hernia and he wouldn't know until he got in there......Had surgery and all is well UNTIL now!! At one of my recent doctor visits it has been discovered that I have another hernia~ I am 25 months out now. With this hernia there is some pain but to pin point what/where is hard. If it gets bad enough I will go in to get it fixed. AND YES, wearing "better fitting close" makes it hurt compared to comfy clothes.
BEST TO YOU!!!
BEST TO YOU!!!

I'm not perfect but I am going to die trying!!!
I had a hiatal hernia before surgery, but haven't had any symptoms since. The surgeon fixed it.
I would eat around 1/2 cup of food each time, because too much in a small pouch may make your symptoms worse. I also would not eat close to bedtime.
I believe the only thing that would really help would be a repair. Try to get a consult and get it done! Acid in the esophagus can cause cell changes that may lead to cancer.
