Hello everyone! Topic weight gain...
I have been searching the board here and watching for posts about gaining with RNY'ers out farther than 2 years.
The reason I was looking was that I noticed I went from losing.................. to trying to stop losing, by adding calories to WHOA... now I have to WATCH what I eat not to gain.
Very interesting ... where once I had to insert cal's to make sure I didnt dip any lower in weight now its watching what I eat like a normal non-wls person would do!
But with reading the post's from everyone I wondered about the people gaining... are they really doing everything the right way and gaining by some odd thing... is there really total absorption that comes back? Is there excuses for gaining due to med's or being farther out?
Please please
know I am NOT accusing or pointing fingers I am just SO curious.
I know there are so key's to my accomplishments that work FOR SURE.
I track my food every day without fail on www.fitday.com I know at the end of the day what I can and cant do from it. I live in fear of gaining and keep a picture of the old me on my re fridge.
Im not sure why Im going on and on but was just sharing my POV at almost three years out in July.
I find this so interesting.... all my friends now are WLS patients so Im sure that helps alot.
Its like when in Weigh****chers the weekly meetings kept on on track... being around RNY'ers keeps me straight.
So.. any thoughts would be great................ I care about all of you so this isnt a slam just me feeling around the 3rd year of my life with RNY.
Hugs everyone!

Being around RNYers doesn't necessarily keep me straight. I have three friends who are over 3 years out and some are not compliant and have gained some weight back. The ones that are less than a year or about a year are doing better but that's probably because you can't help but lose or maintain (or have to eat more to keep from losing, like you said) early out.
I'm basically maintaining at 2.5 years out (July 2006) but I do see that scale creeping ever so slowly up with my calories about 1800 a day. It's not as easy as eat more protein and drink more water anymore, I'm learning.
I follow the rules. No fluids with meals, no fluids for 30 minutes after. No carbonated beverages, protein first, I have been eating some Christmas treats and dabbled in real sugar instead of the SF stuff. I don't dump anymore on sugar. I don't dump anymore on high fat stuff (as far as I know, I haven't tried high fat sausage that made me dump before).
But the fact of the matter is, since July I've gained 4 pounds. I've gone from 125 to 129 and played with 130 several times in the last week. I'm scared that I'm done malabsorbing too.

Yes, RNY worked for me but it also requires a lot of work from me!

I was browsing on some of the other forums and came acroos a new website called www.beyondchange-obesity.com its a magazine that had a great article about weight gain. I have gained almost 20 pounds in the last 1 1/2 years and seems nothing I do helps me lose. Today my husband and I spent the morning touring health clubs, I really need to get on a regular workout schedule and he is willing to help me. Seems at about 18months out I started being able to eat more and I dont dump at all. I cant eat much at a time but seem to eat more often. Right after new years I have to get with the program. Good luck, Deb
I am 3 years and 5 months out. I maintain my weight easily. I feel full after eating and can't eat anything for a few hours.
I try to eat protein first, and then add veggies. I eat some carbs like rice and potatoes but go easy on the bread these days.
I don't eat sweets because once I start I tend to eat huge amounts of sweets. I don't dump, I CAN eat sugar, I choose not to.
I also hate to think of going back to the miserable life I had before RNY. I think we sometimes just get too comfortable with our loss and start eating like weight gain is impossible. I believe the carbs are the reason for gaining weight. Those who eat meat, eggs, cheese, and low carb veggies don't gain even after a few years. Read the gaining posts, and you will see people saying they need to get back on track. This would mean to me getting off track and eating foods that will always lead to weight gain unless eaten in moderation.
Sometimes you will see people 1-2 years out posting about eating large amounts of cookies and ice cream while losing or maintaining their loss. These will be the same people in 3-4 years posting about getting back on track and being shocked at gaining 50 pounds.
