Weight Gain - suggestions needed!
The night eating is a problem for me too. I take Janumed (metformin and januvia together) and the actos now...I think the only other med wll be insulin i think. I am so struggling with this and I have to get back on track...today someone gave me a gift of a large container of cashews because he knew I couldn't eat cookies!!!!!!!!! People mean well but it's like dangling $$$$ in front of you while you are in quicksand!

Diabetic here also. I take a small dosage of insulin and BYETTA. It is the newer form of protocol for insulin resistant Type II diabetics. It is actually helpful in weight loss. I was struggling a little bit with my sugar control and once I added BYETTA post WLS, it became much more stable.
Talk to your PCP about the benefits of BYETTA for you.

The nurse who works in my surgeon's office is a bariatric patient. She explained that after about 18 months to 2 years your body stops malabsorbing calories...this is where the weight gain begins and you have to be more diligent about your eating plan. I too am a diabetic but I do eat carbs which I believe gets me into trouble. Are you a type 1 or type 2 diabetic???? After 17 years living with diabetes, my pancreas doesn't produce much insulin. I am trying to resist going on insulin but now I'm taking 30 mg. of actos and that drug does cause weight gain. I'm thinking of going off of it and perhaps switching to insulin pen. So I think I will start on South Beach to lose those pesky 5 lbs!I don't know if I agree with your nurses statement about malabsorbing. ALL of the staff at my doc's office, including the doc's, have always said that you "might" grow back some villi inside your intestines, to make up for bypassing your insides, in other words, more villi, to absorb more, but.....once you're bypassed, thats it. Me? I'm over 4 years out, it will be 5 years in June, and I still don't absorb nuthin'. According to my surgical report, I am bypassed 140 cm. I know this can vary a lot, with different doc's, but what I am hearing is that 100 to 150cm bypassed is standard, for a RNY.
Yes, I've had a "bounce back" gain of 20 lbs. Yes, it gets harder when we are further out, But....in my opinion, we are NOT going to suddenly after 5 years, revert back to having the same anatomy that we did before. I know for a fact, that I still do NOT absorb anything the same way as I did before. If I did, I wouldn't need antibiotic SHOTS, when I am sick, cause I don't even absorb the liquid kind. If it were true, I wouldn't have to keep adjusting my supplement intake because of malabsorbtion. I could go on and on, but you get the drift. Don't believe everything everyone says about us, cause I think they're guessing half the time! They don't live inside our bodies, with our new "Lexus interior". LOL.... But we do. Once we have been given this gift, they can't take it away! (thats the cool part!!!) I would bet that you still malabsorb to a great degree. And those white carbs are probably the culprit. They are just evil! You hang in there....Just keep on, keeping on. Those pounds will come off. By the way, you look awesome! Don't worry.....you'll be OK. Have a great day!
Interesting stuff you write...I have never heard of this and so now I'm curious. My endocrinologist increased my dose of actos and it does cause weight gain so I have to see if I can change to something else...because I do not like the way I feel and the fact that my clothing is snug...I really don't eat many white carbs - lots of whole grains and fiber so it doesn't make much sense to have a 4-5 lb gain in just 2 weeks. Has to be the actos. Thanks for responding.
Sheri, I've maintained for the most part although I do find it more of a daily struggle to eat right. I know what to do but have really been dealing with allot of stress at work and family issues. My son is having problems (ADHD) and it's been quiet an emotional rollercoaster.
I am so ready for the new year to get here, I'm so tempted with all the holiday food. Right now my thought is to get through the next 2 weeks and maybe even do the 5 day pouch test as a plan to refocus on my food choices. I know that if I don't do something about my choices I will be seeing a number I don't like.
I'm coming up on 4 years (Feb 09) and feel grateful that until the past 6 months I haven't struggled to much. I'm just 2 lbs shy of my upper limit and would like to get back down about 5 lbs.
I do believe the diabetes and meds are probably causing some of your regain and problems. I agree the South Beach program is probably a good program for you to follow.
Hang in there, post on the board we'll be here to support and encourage you.
