Weight Gain - suggestions needed!
Hi!
I am 2 years post op. Lowest weight 1 year ago was 127. Weight has been creeping up despite the fact that I am in the gym 5x a week! I can eat more often and have stopped malabsorbing. I worry so much, I don't want to go over 138 yet today i was 139! Yikes! My clothes are feeling a little tight, I could be bloated too! Any suggestions would be apprecitiated...I don't want to do the pouch test, if anyone has had these issues and has conquered them, I'd love to hear...I am 54, 5'2.75" and lost about 85 lbs!

I to starting gaining weight at about 2 years out. I now have 20 pounds on but it feels like 50. It came on like 5 pounds at a time. I am determaned not to buy a larger size clothes. My size 12's are snug but I have a closet full. Getting back to basics is really the only way to do it. I tried the 5 day pouch test but really had a hard time with the first 2 days, liquids only. I lost a few pounds but put it back on after I started eating again. I think cutting back on carbs and following the basics of protein firs****er and exercise is the best remedy now I also need to get with the program. Maybe we should all start a new years plan ( not diet ), that would bring us back to pre op. Journaling what we eat and really sticking to the program and making that tool work. Deb

WOW! I don't feel so alone now. Found people who are out a few years and are dealing with wt. gain. Thought I would not find anyone besides the newcomers who are not where I am four years out this dec 27th. I have gained 20lbs back and gaining more by the minute. I am sooo struggling. I know I am eating way too much probably even for a non surgery person. I keep hearing that going back to the basics is the way to kick start wt. loss. But my APPEtite does not agree. I am so glad I found you all that I can't seem to stay on the subject.
Also wondering if anyone out there is four years out or more and have maintained their lowest weight or goal wt? any suggestions on how they do that would be appreciated. I have journaled, saw dietician, exercised, but honestly I have done many things but never really followed through on any one thing thoroughly. Only thing I have really stuck to was exercising as much as I can only sparadically at times because of fatigue and now recently my sciatica is really giving me problems with walking.
Just really want to thank eveyone here because it's not so easy to say what's really on your mind and share it with other people. Sarah07

I will be 6 years out the end of Feb. 2009. (SIX WHOLE YEARS?!!?!!?!!) Anyway, I have managed to maintain my weight within 5 lbs either way due to dilligence. I don't deprive myself but I make darn sure I am accountable for whatever it is I put in my mouth. I excercise every day, holiday and vacation days included and I watch myself around sugar and other "white" foods because once I get into them it is heck to break the cycle.
I am by no means a perfect patient. I have had days where I ate candy and crackers all the live long day. (Cadbury eggs during Easter are my drug of choice) I don't always want to go to the freaking gym when it is cold/raining/snowing/hot/warm/mild etc. but I make myself do it anyway. Sometimes I feel that if I have to run around a track/neighborhood/school/gym etc I will lose my mind, but the alternative just doesn't appeal to me anymore.
I had my guts rearranged but my eating disorder will never go away. I have to constantly battle the demons in my head. They are quieter since surgery, but they are still there. I love my new life and I refuse to give in. It's hard work, as we all know.

Catch. It. Now. Not in another 2 lbs., not in another 5 lbs. DO IT NOW!!
I started re-gaining just shy of 2 yrs. post-op. No mystery--I simply started doing all the things we know not to do . . . but just a little bit here & there . . . and a little more . . . just a couple pounds up . . . then a couple more . . . denial . . . a little more denial . . .
I am now struggling not to gain more than the 40 lbs. I've re-gained at this point. Honestly, during this month, I'm just hanging on. I know exactly what I need to do after Christmas: eat the way I'm supposed to--in moderate portions--track my food on thedailyplate.com--drink water & Crystal Light instead of Diet Coke--and get back to exercising. No magic--just need to do it. When I do, I lose weight. When I don't, I gain. Not rocket science.
Don't be me!

Hi Sheri:
I would suggest tracking everything that goes into your mouth on Fitday.com, or one of the other on-line tracking websites. Start planning out your meals / snacks, and stick to a calorie count. Do you still see your Nutritionist? If not, make an appointment, and they can help you determine how many calories you should be eating a day. I am almost 3 years out - I hover around 1400 to 1600 calories a day. I am losing slowly here (I run a lot). Honestly, when I am diligent about planning, and eating on a schedule, I am not hungry.
Go back to basics - protein first, no drinking with meals, get rid of the bad carbs, etc. You can do it!!

Hi Elisa:
Thanks for your words of encouragement. I have to admit that I am lazy to plan and write things down but I know it's important. I keep asking my nutritionist to give me a calorie count now that I am not malabsorbing but she hasn't done it. I think 1600-1800 calories is good to maintain, probably need less to lost the 5 lbs I want to. A friend of mine who is also a bariatric patient became a mindless eater and was unhappy with her weight gain and she had never gotten to her goal so she went on South Beach at the beginning of the summer and successfully lost 30 lbs putting her below her doctor's goal. She is thrilled. I am going to borrow the South Beach Diet book from the library and follow that instad of doing the 5 day pouch test...they have some really great recipes too! Keep in touch my NJ buddy!

I'm 3 years post-op and am curious about your statement that you don't malabsorb any longer. How do you know that? Is there a test for that?
I have lost 100 lbs. I started at 260 and hang around 145-150. I did gain from my very lowest of I think 139 (only for a moment in time). Then, my body just started to sort of expand and change a little but I seem to be maintaining pretty well at this weight. It is a job, however. You have to always be aware of what you're eating and how much you're eating, etc. I am diabetic so I'm especially careful not to eat starchy carbs. I eat no bread, potatoes, rice, etc.
My only suggestion is to push the protein and veggies and don't drink with meals, etc. -- you know the old "getting back to basics" thing.
Good luck.
Linda

The nurse who works in my surgeon's office is a bariatric patient. She explained that after about 18 months to 2 years your body stops malabsorbing calories...this is where the weight gain begins and you have to be more diligent about your eating plan. I too am a diabetic but I do eat carbs which I believe gets me into trouble. Are you a type 1 or type 2 diabetic???? After 17 years living with diabetes, my pancreas doesn't produce much insulin. I am trying to resist going on insulin but now I'm taking 30 mg. of actos and that drug does cause weight gain. I'm thinking of going off of it and perhaps switching to insulin pen. So I think I will start on South Beach to lose those pesky 5 lbs!
Sheri-
Just a thought...I'm also still diabetic but seeing great normal blood sugars taking Januvia which does NOT cause weight gain. Consider asking your physician if this is an alternative for you? I'm coming up on my 3rd Surgiversary (1/30), got down as low as 121lbs and struggle to stay at 135-139lbs. Wish the lack of appetite had lasted a lifetime but it came back big-time at about the 2 year mark. Every day is now a struggle to do what I've learned and not revert to really bad eating habits...can't seem to conquer the night eating.
Good Luck!
Terri
